  • Britney Spears and Kevin Federline Knock off.

    2.7
Ok Plot. Nothing special. New detective is awful. Wooden, stiff and unatural. She is very distracting, to the point where you cannot get into the show. Watching it the second time unfortunately confirmed my first impression. I give up after half a dozen shows!! I'm off to watch Numb3rs on Friday's until next year. Hopefully she will have been replaced and I can watch L&O instead of L&O:T&A with Pinocchio's girlfriend in the lead. (nothing against Ms. Govich personally, I'm sure she is a nice person etc but she just ruined my favorite show!!!!)moreless
  • You can teach an old dog some new tricks

    10
What a way to wake up this show. Forget the story, that was typical L&O fare, it is the new characters and situations that are what I will be watching. The girl I didn't like in Conviction I now like in L&O, she shows a lot of promise as the new detective complete with her own set of problems before she even starts, she seems like a female Chris Noth and that can only be a good thing, and Horatio's dead wife has been resurrected as a very believable ADA, who knew she could really act? Now that Jack is too old to go after his latest hottie assistant, he gets a brand new backstory about a daughter he won't speak to...I can't wait for more.moreless
  • The obvious story of Brittney Spears with a Twist...and we meet Greene's new partner.

    7.8
I love Law & Order. I love all of them.

I read a lot of forums about the addition of Milena Govich as Ed's new partner. Most of what I read was negative except for the males who were drooling while they waited for this first episode. I decided early that I was NOT going to listen to what others were saying about the new female. I loved Milena in "Conviction"; I thought she was wonderful so I was looking forward to seeing her on Law & Order.

After watching "Fame", I can honestly say, I was not impressed. I wasn't prepared for what I saw. The storyline for her was terrible. Something was off about her. I can't quite place my finger on it. I thought about it over the weekend and I still can't figure out what was off.

As for the rest of the show, it was classic Law & Order stuff. It's why I still watch the show after all these years.

In the beginning when Mike Logan was paired with Max Greevey and then with Phil Cerreta, adjusting from Max to Phil was no big deal. Even when Briscoe came on it didn't bother me. When Mike was "Exiled" to Staten Island and Briscoe had to take on a new partner, I couldn't accept it. To this day, I have issues with Benjamin Bratt. It took me some time to accept Ed as well because I'd only seen him in "Any Day Now" where he was a bit of a jerk but he grew on me the way Rey never did. When Briscoe was gone I didn't know if it would be the same. Dennis Farina (NOT one of my favorite actors) did a great job and won me over in the short time he was on. Now, with Milena, I have an open mind again. I know it'll take time to accept her and by the middle of this season I should have a feel for if I am going to love her or if I will have Benjamin Bratt issues with her. For now, I'll wait and see.moreless
  • New faces, the same fabulous oomph!

    9.9
Seventeen years on the air, and half of them have been spent skating around the personal problems of the characters. This season, Dick Wolf has promised to give us little glimpses into the back histories of the show's numerous faces. Well, if the first episode is any indication, he's off to a raging good start.

When a policeman is killed investigating a case of breaking and entering, the clues ultimately lead to a spoiled blonde starlet and her rapper husband. It becomes a political game of fame, drugs, and blackmail as Green and his new partner attempt to unravel a case substantial enough for McCoy and ADA Connie to take to trial.

The introduction of Nina Cassidy, the new police detective on the block, is fantastic. She doesn't have a good rapport with Van Buren, who wanted another, more seasoned cop after the retirement of Detective Fontana. Ed Green doesn't seem to be taking to her with much enthusiasm either, which makes her determination to prove herself all the more striking. Little glimpses into her life lead the audience to make conclusions: she has a brother in the force, she happened to stop a robbery in a beauty parlor, and she wants to "fast-track" into the Homicide Department. In the end, she has a nice dynamic and I think will prove to be one of the show's most enduring female characters.

Connie too has a great deal of snap and charge. Unlike Borgia, whose actress complained that she felt like the "L&O coffee girl," Connie has a quiet but striking presence that erupts into a mild-mannered but fiery temper. Look past the striking features and there's quiet a talent budding in our midst. The show is doing well beneath the strength of so many new introductions and an admittedly daring and controversial rip-off of Britney Spears and Kate Moss, but the real prize was the elusive whispers about McCoy. He has not spoken to his daughter in nine years. And clearly, she is involved in something inappropriate and/or illegal. How do we know this? Because some nasty little photographer tried to blackmail McCoy with it.

I'm excited about the new season, and cannot wait to see where this particular plot thread leads.moreless
  • Why I watch the show!

    8.6
This is why I watch the show and that despite a new cop and a new DA(The one that was Horatio's all too brief wife in CSI Miami) as the Britney Spears and Kevin Fenderline story fits into the show. As a murder of a cop. Still it is going strong but what I don't like is that it is in a new time slot.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • Justin Smolka uses J Train as his rap name. A similar name was used in a previous episode; "3 Dawg Night" featured a rapper named G Train. Maybe J Train copied him?

    • Van Buren tells Cassady she spent five years in 'the bag' (New York cop slang for the blue uniform) and seven in undercover narcotics, before taking this post which she has been at for 13 years of real time, which would be a 25-year career. If she joined the academy right out of high school at age eighteen, Anita would be about 43 years old.

    • Jack McCoy has not had any contact with his daughter in nine years. His daughter has never been seen on the show.

    • Fontana's absence is explained by stating that he retired.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • (Watching J Train's music video)
Jack McCoy: Maybe it's a generational thing, but this is incomprehensible to me.
Connie Rubirosa: It's incomprehensible to anyone without a lobotomy.

    • Teddy Gullo: He'd gotten into selling stalkerazzi photos.
Nina Cassady: Pictures of celebrities with their hair in curlers scratching their ass?

    • Ed Green: If you knew me a day longer, and you were a dude, I'd pop you in the mouth for saying that. If I have a disagreement with you, I'm gonna say it to your face. You're not going to hear about it through the Lieutenant. That's lesson number two.
Nina Cassady: How many lessons are there, exactly?
      Ed Green: There's 740. Exactly.

    • Sky Sweet: All I wanted was you to love me.
Justin Smolka: I gave you everything.
Sky Sweet: You gave me orgasms.

    • Anita van Buren: (reading a tabloid article about J Train) 'His hard-partying ways have forced a separation, but only as far as the guest house of her Bel Air mansion.'

    • (Sky attempts to get the detectives to leave.)
Sky Sweet: I'm exhausted. The baby's kept me up all night this week
Nina Cassady: Page six shows you partying all over the city this week.
Sky Sweet: I liked it better when you didn't talk.
Nina Cassady: Well, since the floodgates are open, you got an infant in the room. (takes Sky's cigarette from her) No smoking.

    • Anita van Buren: (about the new detective) I talked to her captain. He was cagey. Not very complimentary.
Nina Cassady: (right behind her) Well, you know what they say, the better you are, the more trash they talk.

  • NOTES (2)

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • Jack McCoy: Photos of what?
Michael Whalen: Katie Holmes giving silent birth.
Actress Katie Holmes began a highly-publicized relationship with Tom Cruise in 2005 and gave birth to their daughter Suri in April 2006. She converted to Cruise's controversial Scientology religion shortly after they became involved, and it was widely reported that she was required to have a "silent birth" in accordance with writings by Scientology's founder, science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.

    • Jack McCoy: A conversation in a nightclub toilet is not Deep Throat's parking garage.

Deep Throat was the nickname given to the man who secretly met with journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein in a Washington D.C. parking garage to share inside information regarding the Watergate scandal. This scandal eventually led to President Richard Nixon's resignation. The identity of Deep Throat was widely speculated about until 2005, when Mark Felt (the Deputy Director of the FBI during Watergate) came forward and said that he was Woodward and Bernstein's source.

    • This episode appears to be ripped from the headlines of the Britney Spears / Kevin Federline scandals, the Kate Moss drug scandal and the Lillo Brancato Jr. case.
In 2006, a scandal erupted when Britney Spears was photographed on more than one occasion being careless with her son, Sean Preston Federline. The characters of J Train and Sky are very similar to the public personas represented by Spears and Federline, even the modeling shots of J Train, which are very similar to recent photographs of Federline.
In 2005, photographs of Kate Moss snorting cocaine showed up in a British tabloid. Reportedly, her boyfriend Pete Doherty had gotten her hooked on drugs, and his manager James Mullord was accused of leaking the photos.
In 2005, actor Lillo Brancato, Jr. was arrested and charged for the murder of off-duty police officer Daniel Enchautegui during a botched robbery.
