  • A massacre at central park, spurred by sexist agenda turns into a fight against gun control for Jack McCoy, taking the manufacturer's of the killer's gun to the grand jury.

Going into this episode, I wasn't expecting such great writing and passionate symbolism, such as McCoy's closing argument in the grand jury trial as well as the Judge's speech after overturning the Jury. Then there's Greene's interrogation of the murder suspect. Extraordinary acting on all counts. I have been watching law and order nonstop (going backwards from season 14) and this is the best episode I've seen yet. It's episodes like this that make me frown upon NBC execs for terminating the show. Exceptional writing that any law and order fan would expect from the halfway mark of the show's journey.moreless

    • Judge Wright: (after Weber's conviction is set aside) Mr. McCoy, I'm not gonna sanction a verdict that can't possibly be sustained on appeal. This conviction isn't based on any proven facts. It's based on the jury's outrage at Mr. Weber's irresponsible and inexcusable conduct. You wanna end the violence, the bloodletting. So do I, Mr. McCoy. In my 30 years on the bench I've seen every permutation of it and (scoffs) it sickens me when somebody profits from it! But tempted, though I may be, putting Mr. Weber in jail won't end the carnage. Until we cure what ails the human heart, it won't make a dent in the body count. In the meantime, no matter how profound our grief, our indignation, I can't let you use this court to raise a lynch mob. I won't allow you to exploit the same base passions Mr. Weber counts on to beef up his bottom line. It's not about being right, Mr. McCoy. It's about doing right. Now, we're adjourned.

    • (McCoy and Carmichael discuss how the Second Amendment be applied)
Jack McCoy: When the Red Coats stormed over Bunker Hill, maybe.
Abbie Carmichael: What about a six-foot-five man breaking in my door?

    • Anita Van Buren: By the way, did you happen to read the news this morning? It's basically a rehash of departmental statements, but the funny thing is, the only name mentioned is yours, Detective Green.
Ed Green: Maybe because it was easier to spell.

    • Lennie Briscoe: (reading Dennis Trope's T-shirt) Never trust anything that bleeds for five days and lives.

    • Ed Green: Hey, Old Spice, what did the Lt. say about me?
Lennie Briscoe: Nothing. Did she tell you I don't like nicknames?

  • NOTES (1)

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • The Rolf 9 firearm that the criminal uses (and illegally modifies to full automatic fire) might be a reference to the real-world Intratec TEC-9 pistol. Like the Rolf 9, the TEC can be easily (and illegally) modified for fully automatic fire. The firearm's name also has the company's name in it (Rolf 9 = Rolf Firearms, TEC-9 = Intratec).

    • This episode appears to be ripped from the headlines of the Marc Lépine case. Every year in Canada, citizens remember the Montréal massacre in 1989 where 14 female students were killed. The killer had an irrational grudge against feminists.
