      • (McCoy gives his closing arguments)
Jack McCoy: Defense attorneys distort the facts. They twist evidence. They will not only go to the mat for their clients, they will take that mat and toss it out the window as far as they can. They are not bound by the truth. They are bound to obfuscate it if it serves to get their clients acquitted. And they should be commended for it, for it makes the system work.

      • Paul Kopell: I climbed macho mountain, and it feels damn good.

      • Jack McCoy: Paul Kopell stayed up until three AM the night before an exam to help me understand the law of perpetuities.
Adam Schiff: Smart has nothing to do with honest. What's your plan?
Jack Mccoy: (quietly) How does a burning at the stake sound?

      • Jack McCoy: (about Paul Kopell) We are not playing the same game.
Claire Kincaid: What is that, the sound of an ego being deflated?

      • (Briscoe and Logan listen to tapes of phone conversations from a mobster's hideout)
Voice One: You got the shirt?
Voice Two: Yeah, I got the shirt.
Voice One: You're sure you got the shirt?
        Voice Two: Yes I'm sure!
Voice One: Okay, okay...(pauses) You got the bullets for the shirt?

      • Jack McCoy: Justice is a by-product of winning.

      • Lennie Briscoe: (Looking in the victim's closet) Whoa, three gray suits. A wild and crazy guy.

      • (Briscoe and Logan ask a hooker for information about a shooter's car)
Dierdre Martin: I got part of the plate- It's New York, L-V-P-1.
Lennie Briscoe: Hey, good work Dierdre. Maybe you'll get a call from the mayor.
Dierdre Martin: Yeah, well, he pays like everyone else.

      • Claire Kincaid: That sounded like more than just a game in there.
Jack McCoy: You'd better take the next elevator. I wouldn't be very good company.

    • NOTES (1)

    • ALLUSIONS (1)

      • This episode appears to be ripped from the headlines of the case of Bruce Cutler. Bruce Cutler was the attorney for famed mafia boss John Gotti, who was removed as Gotti's counsel because he was deemed to be too immersed in Gotti's activities to be an independent counsel. Gotti was found not guilty in part due to the bribery of juror George Pape.
