Yay! This episode happens to be the first I ever watched, and the episode which sucked me into the series.
I had been watching all these other crappy CSIish crap, where everything is so dramatic, the good guy is a genius, the good guy is arrogant, always gets the last word, never ever loses, makes up forensics...
And then I watch this episode, which is almost average for Law and Order, yet a billion points beyond CSI.
The plotting was smart, leaving the ending uncertain. Did the arsonist set the whole thing up and screwed the system, or did the accountant put on an act to look coerced?moreless

An attempted murder of a tough judge leads Briscoe and Green on a wild goose chase to track down the inimical criminal. When the perpetrator is found, Carmichael and McCoy have a difficult time making a case.
