Two children are shot in an incident that seems to lack motive. A description leads the detectives to a teen who claims it's not him. Is he the right one, or is it one of his friends? The D.A.'s office struggles to make the charges stick. The more they search, the more confusing it gets.

Schiff wants to get the shooter as well as the young man's boss, a dealer, but the case constantly threatens to slip away.

What is the connection to other tenants in the building and a wealthy real estate agent?

Logan and Robinette are excellent, as usual. S. Epatha Merkerson appears in a very compelling performance as the first suspect's mother. She would later return in the unrelated role of Lt. Van Buren, from Season 4 onward.moreless

    ADD QUOTES
    • Adam Schiff:Offer him man-two. Ben Stone: (incredulous) He engineered the death of an infant for heaven's sake, people will be outraged! Adam Schiff: People will forget this outrage as soon as the next outrage hits the front page.

    • Paul Robinette: Family court judges may not like kids with guns, but they like a clean case. They'll want a motive. Max Greevey: Who says the little sonofabitch needs a motive? Don Cragen:Max- Max Greevey: What the hell's a motive, anyway? You took my seat? (mimes gunshot) Bam! He's looking at my girlfriend? Bam! I need them SHOES?! Bam!

    • Grandmother: (Sadly) Why you always come too late? Max Greevey: Excuse me? Grandmother: I said how come the police are never there before somebody gets shot?

    • Don Cragen: Nobody has an old-fashioned altercation anymore, you notice that? Good fistfight? Somebody looks at you cock-eyed, you whip out a MAC-10.

    • Don Cragen: At this clip, we're gonna have a worse infant mortality rate than Ethiopia.

    • Ben Stone: Ingrams'll go up for murder, one way or the other. Adam Schiff: If Mr. Kay decides to testify. Real estate fraud, not much to work with. Paul Robinette: Maybe Kay has a conscience. Adam Schiff: Eh, maybe he houses the homeless in his basement, but I wouldn't count on it.

    • (Greevey and Logan ask Denise Winters if Gregory was involved in drugs.) Denise Winters: Mister, I got a dead baby, a boy who may be crippled, and a supervisor who tells me that going to the morgue and to the hospital is considered personal time and now you're telling me that Greg ... Gregory was on drugs!? Maybe he brought this on himself!?

    • Ben Stone: You know, this Chamber of Commerce routine is getting on my nerves.

    • Mike Logan: Roneld, stupid and tough is a bad combination. Roneld Griggs: Yeah, well, it works for you, man, right?

    • Kay's Lawyer: You haven't mentioned any incentives for cooperation. Ben Stone: No? Well...how is this: if your client doesn't start talking now, I'll tear his life apart.

    ADD ALLUSIONS
    • The episode title, Mushrooms, is a reference to the classic 1980 video game, Centipede, produced by Atari. In the game, the player would shoot at centipedes descending upon them through a field of mushrooms, which would frequently be hit instead. This is also referenced in the show's dialogue.

    • This episode was inspired by real-life cases of young children hit by stray bullets.
