Briscoe and Green investigate the beating death of a gay man and the kidnapping of his adopted son, and their investigation leads McCoy and Carmichael to believe that homophobia was the motive rather than ransom.
  • Good example of a good programme, with a well-written twist in the plot.

In this story, the crime runs the gamut from murder to kidnapping as the plot twists us around as to which was the central crime and what the motive of the criminal was.

Briscoe and Green are in a desperate race against time as they attempt to find a baby kidnapped from the scene of Brad Mandell's murder, as the baby is ill and needs regular medication. The big twist happens when they discover that the baby has been taken by his birth mother rather than by someone who is after a ransom. This is - being this programme - not the only twist.

Briscoe and Green make an arrest slightly earlier than usual, affording us more courtroom time so that we can see the murderer-kidnapper's perception of things presented by his lawyer, or, if you prefer, the murderer-kidnapper's lawyer interpret the facts to her client's best advantage, because, of course, we don't know what happened, we only know the aftermath.

All in all, a very good episode of a consistently good programme.moreless

    • Jack McCoy: Provided she played no active role in the victim's death and she testifies at trial, she'd probably be able to walk away with the community service. Mrs. Goddard: Maybe the jury will find me not guilty. Jack McCoy: I'm pretty good trial lawyer, Ms. Goddard. I don't get surprised that often.

    • Mr. Alvarez: We were like any couple with a kid. Early to bed, early to rise. The only restaurants we went to had paper placemats on the tables with crayons.

    • Susan Powers: My dealings with the police have been a joke. Anita van Buren: You haven't dealt with me, Miss Powers.
