That the victim is a cop makes the murder punishable by the death penalty, a subject of much discussion during the episode. Victor Garber, who plays Paul Sandig, is in fact from Canada, where the death penalty has been out of use since 1976.
This is one of only a handful of episodes in which the district attorney (Adam Schiff) shares a scene with a cop (Rey Curtis).
Lennie Briscoe: I've always said drinking alone is underrated.
Prince (referring to Cassidy/Croft): He had to be one of New York's finest. Lennie Briscoe: Well now he's one of New York's deadest.
Rey Curtis (to Ted Quinlan): What do you say cut the crap here? His name wasn't Cassidy, it was Croft and he was on the job. He's dead now and that pisses us off extra special. You catching on?
(After admitting she helped Sandig launder money.) Bank Teller: Am I in a lot of trouble?
(Regarding his client's records.) Sandig: I am not my client's keeper.
