Angie Harmon's performance as ADA Abbie Carmichael deserves special commendation for this episode. Although all of the performances, McCoy, the "ladies" man, the duped widower/cancer wives are all very good in their own right, her performance stands alone.

For her three seasons on the show, she played one of the toughest ADA's out there, probably the only one who consistently took harder stances on issues than Jack McCoy. Playing hard as nails all the tme and doing it well pays off in an episode like this. After visitng the ward of the prison for Alzheimer's patients (or maybe other dementia), she comes back and tells McCoy the story about where they are thinking of sending the old man who is facing the murder charges. She says "Jack, it's the most appalling place I've ever seen." and then goes into a fairly intense description of what she witnessed, her voice cracking the whole time. It was truly eye-opening for both her ability as an actress and also to highlight the real-world problem prisoners in this kind of condition pose for courts and the difficult "Hobson's Choice's" that decision-makers face. Outstanding work, Angie.moreless
