Logan played on the police baseball team.
Logan's mother was diagnosed with cirrhosis and, with him taking her to her first meeting, joined an alcoholic support group. Two weeks later, she and her sponsor got drunk together at a bar.
Anita van Buren: Benny gambled? Mike Logan: Seems he might have fallen down the twelve steps.
Mike Logan: Support groups, huh? They got one for recovering detectives?
Lennie Briscoe: I don't care how close they were, I don't see him bragging to his son about his last conquest. Mike Logan: Yeah, but the guys down at the office are a different story. Lennie Briscoe: Tell me about it. Mike Logan: What?
Lennie Briscoe: The killer leaned on every doorbell until some moron buzzed him in. Mike Logan: Who says New York isn't a friendly town?

During Stone's interrogation of Joey Lang, the African-American Lang frequently refers to Stone as 'Casper'. This is a reference to Casper the Friendly Ghost of short cartoons, who was a friendly, white floating ghost with no legs.
This episode appears to be ripped from the headlines of the James Jordan murder. James, the father of basketball superstar Michael Jordan, was shot in July of 1993 by teens Larry Martin Demery and Daniel Andre Green. The media initially tried to link James' death to Michael Jordan's alleged gambling problems, but James Jordan had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. His killers were both sentenced to life in prison.
