Ed Green: The monkeys were infected with something, right? Lennie Briscoe: They weren't here to learn how to ride unicycles.
The episode is ripped from the headlines of an incident in Washington, DC in 1989. That year an obscure African filovirus was transported to a D.C. lab and caused some lab monkeys to get infected and die. The Army, CDC and a private company worked together to stop a potential outbreak in the nearby human population. The details of this incident were told in the book, The Hot Zone by Richard Preston.
The animal refuge Assissi Meadows is named after St. Francis of Assissi, the patron saint of animals.
