  • While out riding, Johnny meets Willie Shay, a singing cowhand and his best friend, a smarter-than-average steer named Blue Boss. A rival cowhand named Jagger shoots Blue Boss. Dan arrests him, but Willie vows to kill him as soon as he gets out of jail.

This was a nice surprise to wake up, and find the great Sammy Davis Jr. making a guest spot on my favorite show. I never got to see these episodes, so each one is new to me, and I am so glad the Encore Westerns Channel brought this show back. This is a great story about racism, those who can look past color, and those who can't. Of course, Dan, Johnny, and Lily, being the good guys, look past Willie being black. Jagger being the bad guy, can't stand being shown up by a black guy and a steer. Sammy was just phenomonal, and really stole the show. I love the exchanges with Peter Brown, where Johnny McKay is trying to be friends with Willie. The heartsick look on Willie's face when Jagger shot Blue Boss, was great TV. Jagger shooting Willie before Willie shot him was a nice twist, and got Willie off the hook for murder, as it turned into self defense. The closing scene with the cowhands offering Willie, Blue Boss II, was heartwarming.
