A wounded Ben Greene is accused of stealing cattle. He insists that he bought them legally, and his brand release is at his cabin. The men who accuse him are unsavory characters that both Johnny and Dan seem to distrust.
Yawkey, who has killed 27 men and has the reputation of being the fastest gun alive, shows up at the Birdcage and sends notice to Dan that he's going to kill him at 3:30 that afternoon. Dan's never met him, and doesn't know why he wants to kill him. Both Johnny and Lily try to talk Yawkey out of it, to no avail. Dan is determined to do his job regardless of the consequences, much to Lily's dismay.moreless
Johnny goes against everyone's better judgement when he takes personal responsibility for four boys who have been arrested for killing a milk cow. The four boys lack any direction in life and remind Johnny of himself at their age. He finds them work at the livery stable, determined to help them rehabilitate. A boxing promoter arrives in Laramie with "Samson the Great," a champion prizefighter. A number of local men pay for a chance to fight Samson in the hope of winning $50 but Samson easily defeats each of them. Samson then settles himself in the local saloon, becoming increasingly obnoxious and abusive. When Deputy McKay intervenes, Samson beats him up and Troop has to deal with the man himself.moreless

At 2:30, he goes into the Birdcage and is soon recognized by a young man, whom he kills right before he shoots Johnny. In a pouring rainstorm at night, after spurning his advances in the Birdcage, she is called in the street by a drunken Earl and shoots him down in a fair fight. Dan is forced to try to arrest her, but she tells him she knows she can outdraw him. Earl's cooler headed brother, Paul, suggests instead she try to 'take him' in a gunfight to prove she really could outdraw the dead man.moreless
Lucy Pastor falls in love with one of her father Lem Pastor's ranch hands named Shag. Lem doesn't want his daughter marrying a lowly ranch hand and proceeds to badly horsewhip him leaving him blind. Shag staggers through the streets until Dan finds him, and takes him to the doctor. Shag vows to kill Lem after what he did. Dan rides out to the Pastor ranch, and is told by Lem that he will kill Shag if he goes near Lucy again. Lucy, tired of living under her father's iron fist, runs to Lily for shelter. Now it is up to Dan, Johnny, and Lily to try to prevent Shag and Lem from killing each other.moreless

The other citizens are eager to hang the suspect when they find him, but the gunslinger, Fent Hartley, is the only one willing to give the accused the benefit of the doubt. Owny is struck by her, not knowing that she is his assailant. When he finds out, his hurt feelings take over. Lily Merrill opens the Birdcage Saloon after being thrown out of Billings, Montana by the sheriff. Dan hears she was involved in a theft/murder, she assumes he wants to be paid off. Dan, of course, refuses money. Both seem surprised that their opinions are wrong, but Dan is still suspicious.
While going to arrest two men for murder, Dan is mauled by a bear. A woman saves him and takes him to her cabin, but he doesn't know she's the sister of one of the wanted men. She nurses him, even though she knows he's a lawman because of his badge, which she saw and threw away. Then her brother and his partner come back, and emotions run high.moreless
Cowhand Dick Sellers delights in taunting old men and teenagers into gunfights that they can't win. When Dan has enough and arrests the man, the town council refuse to do anything except fine Sellers for fear that his friends will go on a rampage.
Dan sends Johnny to Casper to testify in the trial of Pete Bole. Bole has hired jailbreak expert, Heracles Snead, to break him out of jail. Bole also has a girlfriend, Britches. While making his plan, Snead takes Britches into the desert, and leaves her there. Johnny comes along, and offers her a lift. However, once she finds out he's testifying against Pete, she clobbers Johnny with his own canteen, and handcuffs him to a tree. Britches comes looking for Snead, and he convinces her to go back and release Johnny so that the Sheriff doesn't double the number of guards. She goes back and lets Johnny loose. Britches ends up falling for Johnny with comedic results.moreless
Doc Holliday is in Laramie and Dan would like to see him go because a family is out for revenge after Doc shoots one of their own. However, he is hanging around for a woman due on the stagecoach and won't go until she gets there.
Upset that Dan refuses to rescind a 10 p.m. curfew he's put on all the saloons in town, the three saloon owners draw straws to see who gets the short straw. That man is the one who is supposed to kill Marshal Troop. Instead, he hires a killer whom Dan knows and recognizes in the cafe.moreless

Dan and Johnny help him into Lily's office to wait for the doctor, and to find out what's going on. Meanwhile, a woman comes looking for Hendon, and wants to leave her husband for him. Hendon rejects her advances, so she comes back with her husband and brother, and wants them to shoot him.moreless

She is followed and returned by an Indian policeman, Great Bear, but not before she meets and is smitten with Johnny. Donna Killmer is a dressmaker in Laramie. Her brother-in-law, Al, returns with her estranged husband Joe. Joe had left Donna to become an outlaw but got shot. Al came up with a scheme for Donna to turn Joe in, collect the reward money, and let the state take care of Joe's medical treatment. Then the gang will break him out of jail. However, Dan immediately suspects that something's not right and Donna has a change of heart.moreless
