  • Luther Boardman is the new editor of the Laramie Free Press. When Dan stops Mort Peters from killing some of Lily's customers at the Birdcage, Luther accuses him of police brutality. Luther starts a campaign that makes Mort the hero and Dan a villain.

This is a commentary that is actually valid on today's press as well as back then. The press today loves to take bad people, and make heroes out of them, as well as make the law enforcement look like bad guys. Here Mort was clearly drunk, threatening to kill Lily's customers. Dan spun him around and punched him right in the face, and he hit his head on the bar. As he and Johnny carried Mort to jail, Luther jumped to conclusions. He might have been upset earlier because Dan told him that he wouldn't do a daily report for the paper. Luther starts making wild accusations against Dan, and even convinces Mort to start believing them. Mort is just a harmless buffoon, who just wanted to pay his fine, meet his girlfriend, and leave. I loved the scene where Lily's is wanting Johnny to intervene, but Johnny tells her that he has learned not try and fight Dan's battles for him. In the end, Luther learns a valuable lesson about not glorifying the outlaw way of life.
