Jessica Kindle confronts Dan Troop in the Birdcage after her husband was just hanged in Laramie. She tells Dan that she pulled the trigger. Dan and Johnny take her back to the office, where they are confronted by her lawyer Les Courtney, who hates Dan.
John Russell put on a heck of a performance in this episode. We really get to see a different side of Dan as he ponders what would happen if turned out the bad guys weren't lying, and they really had hanged an innocent man. I also liked Johnny giving him the vote of confidence, and saying that maybe you can't be right all the time. I also like that Dan wouldn't except Johnny's premise that you can't be right all the time, and teaching his student a valuable lesson about being a lawman. The thing that ran into my mind right away was, if Mrs. Kindle really had done the killing, why would she wait until after her husband was hanged to come forward? My hats off also to the guy that played Les. He was a slimeball schyster that you wanted see Dan smack around. Speaking of which that was a nice beating he gave those drunks in the bar. It was a rare instance of Dan losing his cool, and really added to the story. I also like Lily seeing Jessica in the Birdcage and immediately asking her to leave. I wished that this episode would have gone longer. I would have loved a bonus scene of Lily trying to comfort Dan. The showdown with Dan, Jessica, and Les was great for its intensity. Then they had the great closing scene where the town votes to give Dan a much deserved raise.
