AIRED:
Malcolm Duvrees and Adolph Hagen arrive in Laramie claiming to represent a new liquor company. Because Hagen carries a gun, Dan and Johnny know he's up to no good, but can't arrest them, because they haven't broken any laws. Meanwhile, Duvrees and Hagen gather all four of the local saloon owners together, make them an offer to buy out their saloons, or they will open up their own saloon, and run the others out of business. They have two days to make up their mind. One of the owners refuses, gets into a gun battle with Hagen, and gets killed. The others want to sell, but Lily refuses, and turns to Dan for help.moreless

I thought this was a really good episode. It really made good use of all three stars: Dan, Johnny, and Lily. Johnny was up first realizing that any businessman that has a gunslinger walking around with him is up to no good. The guy playing Malcolm does a good job of being fake nice at first, and then revealing his inner snake later in the episode. I like that they had one of the other owners also not back down rather than just putting everything on Lily. By shooting the other owner that refused to sell, it added to the story, and made me want to see the bad guys get what's coming to them. I loved Dan's scheme of getting part ownership in the Birdcage. It showed just why he's the main guy on the show. Lily did a great job of standing up to Duvrees, and then showing her vunerable side when she didn't know what to do after the other saloon owner was shot. I also liked the addition of having Jake the bartender go tell Dan and Johnny that Lily was considering selling, and moving to Denver. We knew Dan wasn't about to let her leave. The closing scene was another of their cutesy exchanges between Dan and Lily. It was well done though.moreless
