Episode Summary

The Town Boys

Johnny goes against everyone's better judgement when he takes personal responsibility for four boys who have been arrested for killing a milk cow. The four boys lack any direction in life and remind Johnny of himself at their age. He finds them work at the livery stable, determined to help them rehabilitate. Three of the boys end up admiring him and wanting his approval, while the fourth boy is not only "bad', he is criminal.

I had seen Richard Evans do some guest spots on Cheyenne and Gunsmoke. On those episodes, he played good guys. This episode was his chance to play a bad kid named Pete and makes you want to see him get smacked around. He's constantly taunting Johnny about being a "goodie." Johnny does his best to try and tame these boys, and manages to get through to the three younger ones. The history is revised a little, because in season one, Johnny was raised by his uncle after his parents died. Yet, in this episode, it makes it sound like Dan raised him. I like how while they had Johnny trying to be the parental figure, they still had Dan sneaking around to make sure he's okay. In the first season, they didn't allow them to show a whole lot of emotion, but as I'm watching the series progress, we get to see more of the camraderie between Dan and Johnny. The final showdown when Pete has the gun was very suspenseful, because you had to think especially in the 60's, that they aren't going to shoot a kid, or let him get beaten up too badly. Dan firing the shot in order to let Johnny get the upper hand, and then slipping unseen out the door was very cool.moreless
