In the original radio series, the town was called Spent, and was changed to Royston Vasey for the TV series.
-
The League of Gentlemen took their name from League of Gentlemen, a 1960 crime/comedy movie based upon a book of the same name by John Boland.
-
Most exterior shots of Royston Vasey were filmed in Hadfield in the Peak District. The Local Shop was built on Marsden Moor.

Tubbs and Edward are based on a shopkeeper the League met while touring in Brighton. Pauline is based on Reece's experiences on a restart course. The "mau mau" sketch is based on a man Reece and Steve overherd in a pub trying to tell a joke but constantly being interrupted. The League took this to the extreme and had Geoff pull a gun on Mike and Brian.

With the obvious exceptions of the Local Shop scenes and some tweaks here and there (Mickey doesn't wet himself, Benjamin's here to meet a friend and not for a job interview), much of this episode is virtually identical to the first radio episode, A Guest at the Dentons.
It's notable how much more evil and satanic Tubbs is in this episode, as opposed to the slightly simple character she would become.
