As a class project, Beaver's class holds a beauty pageant of sorts- that is to say, he and his classmates are asked to bring in their old baby photos so that they can vote on who was the most beautiful baby. I have to say, this doesn't seem like much a project for fourth graders- more like an amusing distraction. I'm also not so keen on the idea of doing it as a beauty pageant. My second grade class did something similar, only we turned it into a game, putting the photos up without names and then having to guess who was who. That didn't work out so well for the sole African American in the class.
Naturally, when June selects a photo for the contest, she sends Beaver's teacher the one that is likely to cause the greatest embarrassment. When each of the Cleaver males sees the photo, they immediately see the potential problems such a picture might cause, but June remains blissfully ignorant. Beaver and Wally show a great deal of sensitivity and maturity in their decision not to share their misgivings with their mother- more than I would have had I been in their shoes. Concealing the truth to spare someone's feelings at the expense of one's own comfort is not always the best way to handle things, but it would seem to have been the wisest course of action in this case. I'm not sure June could have faced the news that she'd put her son in a potentially humiliating position. When Ward expresses misgivings about her photo selection, June bristles at the suggestion that she'd do anything that would cause Beaver embarrassment, and he very hastily reassures her before she can become overly upset.
I haven't watched much "Leave it to Beaver" in past, but I'm quickly coming to the conclusion that June Cleaver is a rather clueless and out of touch character. Ward, on the other hand, is a level-headed and understanding sort and fixes the problem exactly as I would have done. Similar praise must be given to Beaver's teacher Miss Landers for her tactful handling of the situation. In the end, Beaver doesn't win the beauty pageant, but the only one upset by this is June. At least she doesn't cause Beaver any further grief by demanding a recount.moreless
