Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • The messenger bringing word of Cynin's approach jumps onto the castle's drawbridge as it is being raised. He then rides right through the gate even though it appears that metal bars are blocking his path.

    • Valiant uses his belt to fight off a wild animal. Once he tosses the beast away, the belt automatically returns to his waist with his weapons strapped onto it.

  • QUOTES (6)

    • Opening lines of the series
Merlin (in voice-over): "Man's fate – what a strange riddle it is. How few clues there are with which to explain the random ways which men seem to begin and end, to live and love, to succeed and fail. (chuckles) Each individual destiny invisibly interweaving with the next, fashioning the beautiful and terrifying tapestries of our lives, shaping our passions and our destinies. Extracting of strange and unexpected prices, demanding that in order for one man to flourish, another must perish…"
      Valiant (waking up): "FATHER!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    • Valiant: "Don't worry Mother, Father will have this battle won in no time. Heh, I mean how could he not, with such an extraordinarily talented son and heir fighting at his side?"

    • Valiant: "Father, Mother, come quickly! We're approaching – (the ship crashes onto shore) – land."
      Briana: "So I see."

    • Willem: "Enough! I already stand with my back to the sea. I can be pushed no farther!"

    • Rolf: "The test of prince is not the spirit he shows when all goes right with his world, but the spirit he shows when all goes wrong. Had you forgotten that?"
Valiant: It seems I had – for a moment."

    • The Dream Dialogue
Arthur (first line in the series): "A New Order. The Round Table. Might will no longer make right."
Merlin: "What then, Arthur? What then shall make right?"
Arthur: "Truth, and justice, Merlin! Protected by Excalibur, and the Knights of the Round Table. They shall come to Camelot, Merlin. To Camelot!"
Merlin: And who will they be, Arthur? These 'Knights of the Round Table?'"
Arthur: "They must value, above all else, truth and honor. They must have souls as pure as dawn and hearts filled with courage. Knight of the Round Table, Champion of Justice, and Defender of Truth – I, King Arthur, call you to this. And, by the power of Excalibur, I name it as your destiny!"

  • NOTES (8)

    • Characters introduced: Prince Valiant, King Willem, Queen Briana (whose name is never mentioned on the show), Rolf, and King Cynin. The falcon also makes his debut by flying over Valiant's ship after Cynin seizes the castle. Merlin and King Arthur are heard in voice-overs but never seen.

    • This is the only episode where the title appears on a black screen rather than one of the still drawings from the end credits.

    • Merlin's opening monologue is set against images of floating chess pieces. Chess will continue to be associated with his character throughout the show's run.

    • Although the battles are violent and men on both sides die, blood is never shown. This will be the norm for most episodes in the series.

    • The battle in the throne room will be revisited in multiple flashbacks throughout the first season.

    • Valiant is shown shirtless for the first time during the montage where the settlement is constructed.

    • Credit for the Dream Animation Sequence goes to Neil Affleck with assistance from Anthony Stanley and Tom Yasumi. The Chess Sequence is credited to Magic Shadows, Inc.

    • Ongoing character traits: Valiant's innate goodness, sword fighting skills, brief bouts of ego and temper, belief in destiny, and willingness to admit when he's wrong and learn from his mistakes.Three images from the theme song appear in this episode's action: Valiant wears Thule's colors and standard during the siege, lots of swords clash in the battle, and the castle on the cliff is seen burning from the perspective of a ship at sea.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • In the comics, Valiant and his family are exiled from Thule (located in modern day Norway) when the prince is a young boy. His father's name is Aguar and the man who conquered the kingdom is Sligon. The queen has no name in the comics. Valiant actually lives in the marsh (the Great Fens of Britain) until he's a teenager, at which point he is inspired to leave by a witch's prophecy.
