Richard and Kahlan unexpectedly meet an old friend, and change their course to the opposite direction to help him, towards Hartland, the village where Richard grew up. When they arrive there they discover things have changed a great deal since they left, and Richard is given an opportunity to reconcile with the past while dealing with yet another perilous situation.moreless
  • Hartland

    "Superb"
Hartland was a superb episode of Legend of The Seeker. I really enjoyed watching this episode because there was a lot of action, drama, intrigue, and character growth. It was interesting to see what Darken Rahl's men were doing in Hartland and what Darken Rahl was willing to sacrafice in order to stop the Seeker. It was fun to see Chase again as he joined the Seeker and Confessor on their journey through the Midlands in the hopes of finding his family along the way. Darken Rahl received great news, but has a shadow of a doubt. I look forward to watching the next episode!!!!!!!moreless
  • Seriously dull, mechanical, predictable, humourless, formulaic, Zedicus-free, pointless, uninspiring, flat, substanceless, substandard....

    "Mediocre"
I classified this as filler, but filler comes in different quality levels and if there was a 'low grade filler' classification option i'd have chosen that. First, Zed (Bruce Spence) was not in this one and he was sorely missed. The other two actors (Craig Horner and Bridget Regan) -- much as I like then -- can't carry the show without him. At least not withouth a lot more to go on in the script and even still after this i'm doubting it. I'd advise the writers/producers not to try that again! if omitting Zed for an ep (or more?) was intentional as a way to cut costs, then they need to find some other way! Second, there was not one funny moment in this ep. Humour is an essential part of the mix in my opinion. Every episode should have multiple moments of well placed and appropriate to the story comic relief. That's where a lot of the art is, in my opinion. There was a feeble attempt at playfulness at the beginning - where Richard is a little jealous thinking Zed confided in Kahlan but not - but she's just stringing him along. Really it was more of just a way to say that Zed would not be in this episode i think. Not exactly hilarious. And then, they just plodded through this really dull cookie cutter plot where you can see what's around every corner, and the only thing that surprises you is the complete lack of surprises. Totally skippable in my opinion, and if there are many more eps like this, I could see myself tuning out.moreless
  • A lot of adventure, subterfuge and plotting and not much emphasis on the Richard/Kahlan romance, which is what the series needed at this point I think

Apart from the initial scene where a playful dialogue between Richard and Kahlan takes place, and a general ascertaining in the end of where Richard's heart really belongs now, there isn't much romance in this episode and that is a good thing. The series needed to take some steps back from the emotional factors and give us some more adventure. Which is exactly what happens with this episode.

Richard and Kahlan find Chase, Richard's old guard captain and friend from Hartland, in the woods while running from the D'harans. They team up and head towards Hartland together, to find out what happened to Chase's family. When they arrive there they discover the whole village willingly submitted to the D'harans, and Richard's brother Michael helping them to establish their rule. After a few initial surprises the team is joined up with Richard's old sweetheart Ana, and Michael repents his behaviour and joins them as well. Together they fight the D'harans and devise a plot to shut down the barrier and make Rahl think the Seeker is dead. Michael behaves differently than in the book in this episode, thus giving him the chance to absolve himself and reconcile with Richard. Apart from that which may be a shock at first (though not necessarily bad, just different), the episode is very enjoyable, with lots of scheming and plotting, wonderful battle scenes and a quick pace that maintains the suspense all the way through. Nice one! Though I missed Zedd and hope he reappears in the next one.moreless
  • And yet another installment of "Vaguely-based-off-the-novel" Legend of the Seeker episode where characters run rampant away from their original selves....

So...Michael...as...the good guy in the end?!?! Say what? As lovely as it was seeing Michael finally portrayed in the good-yet-gullible "THEY TRICKED ME!!!" light, in the book he knew exactly what he got his people into and wound up becoming a traitor fully knowing that he was doing this AND ratted out Richard to Darken Rahl. So why did Legend of the Seeker change this? Well, aside from the fact that over half of what happened in the book is NOT in the TV series, I would assume it was so people could come away with a "Poor Michael" feeling in the end. I'm really sad to see it change even if it did make you feel all warm and fuzzy after. Aside from that and the fact that they are just completely making up their own plot, I am still enjoying the series.moreless
