Let's Play Crosswords

Show Summary

"Merv Griffin's Crosswords" is a fast paced gameshow from the master of gameshows, the late Merv Griffin. The show is hosted by Ty Treadway and announed by Edd Hall. "Crosswords" is played among three rounds. The questions give a clue and the length of the answer, much like a typical crossword puzzle. Dollar values range from $50 to $150 in the first round, depending on the length. These values are doubled in the second and third rounds. Special clues include a "Crossword Getaway" where answering correctly earns the contestant a trip, and "Crossword Extra", where the player may bet money on a clue. Money and prizes are cached in a contestant's podium. The second round introduces three new players, known as spoilers, who may take over the podium of one of the contestants upfront if those do not know the answer and they do. At the end of three rounds, whoever has the most money moves on to the end game. That player will have 90 seconds to complete the puzzle and, if successful, will win an additional $2,000 and another trip.

"Crosswords" is slated to air fall 2007 and has landed a big syndication deal with five NBC-owned stations. Check your local listings for air dates and times.moreless

  • Good show.

I think this show is pretty good and fast pace.

It's interesting to see the question and answers are. What the contestants would say or guessed.

What I don't like about this show is that it isn't really fair.

The 2 people who started out making all the money and then get overtaked by a spoiler? (Why the heck are they even called a 'spoiler'?)

At the end, the person who's lucky enough to answer a question (even 1!!!!) right get the podium with the most money and get the play the last thing. NOT FAIR.

They should change it and gives the people their own podium.

    Overall, decent show.moreless
  • If you like a fast-paced or king-of-trivia type of game show, you'll be disappointed. However, if you're a word geek like me (I carry a dictionary in my purse), you might like it.moreless

This show's not for everyone. I call the show "the marriage of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!" If you like a fast-paced or king-of-trivia type of game show, you'll be disappointed. However, if you're a word geek like me (I carry a dictionary in my purse), you might like it. The contestants know words I've never heard before! When I watched it the first time, the music almost lulled me to sleep (it put my brother to sleep), but it's a good fit for this show. After all, crosswords are supposed to be relaxing. It does get exciting sometimes, especially during the final round. I have actually screamed at my TV before. The final prize is disappointingly small, however: $2,000 and a trip. (It reminds me of games you see on Game Show Network - not very generous there, either.) Anyway, to me, it's not a bad show.moreless
