  • This literary name-dropping is getting tiresome.

Yes, yes, all right, we all accept that Russell Lewis, the writer of this episode, is a well-read fellow. There isn't (and never was) any need for him to reduce "Lewis" to a literary game, something he's done in script after script. Here, the young couple brought into a shady world of sinister games-playing by an older couple are called "Nick" and "Honey", after the younger couple in Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?"; just to ensure we appreciate how smart Lewis is, Nick's surname is "Addams", admittedly spelled with two d's (as in Charles), but unmissably meant to remind us of Hemingway's autobiographical hero (and just possibly the actor of the same name, who died in 1969). So what? Why not show a bit of invention instead? The plot is not without interest, unpleasant as it is, but this would-be cleverness isn't clever, just tedious.moreless
