    Hi

This is the very first episode of Lewis I ever saw and its fast become my favourite - its so haunting. Watched it every day for aweek on ITV player. I especially like the way the truth comes out. I really like this kind of morally complex, gritty storyline. I'm often very conflicted on the butler because while I agree that murder is totally wrong I can see that the butler was mentally disturbed and for that reason I have some sympathy for him - Lord Augustus was the real villain in all this actually and I haven't an ounce of pity for him. He can rot in jail. If he hadn't abused Briony none of this would have started and there was an indication that he abused Hopkiss and corrupted him though he did not force him to commit murder. Can't wait to discuss the episode with other fans.

I've watched this episode twice now and have to watch it again. The more I think I understand it the more confused I become. Did the estate manager kill himself or did Hopkiss (or someone else) kill him? It is certainly implied that the Lord might have abused Hathaway as well. Clearly being the estate manager's child is no protection. We have our proof of that. What is Scarlett's crime? Forgery? What is the Lord's crime, child abuse? And Hopkiss killed four people, three? He killed Mrs. Graham, possibly Mr. Graham, Dr. Black and "Inspector Lynley" at the end. Are we to assume that the wedding is off? Do you think that Hathaway and Scarlett spent the night together? Lewis certainly thinks Hathaway has been compromised and that would account for it.

Hopkiss killed the estate manager. Scarlett was an accomplice after the fact. She helped him dispose of the body. And I'd certainly say the wedding was off. Tariq, and his family, were essentially buying a place in society. If the scandal of the murders didn't scare them off, the taint of Lord Gus' crimes certainly would.

Lord Gus was guilty, by his own admission of worse than child abuse. He is a pedophile.

Lewis, as Hathaways' boss, cannot afford the possiblity of the investigation being compromised. And Hathaway's actions certainly left that possibility open. If he had talked to Lewis a bit more, possibly explained a few things, it would have gone smoother.
