  • Hathaway revisits scenes from his childhood when he and Lewis investigate a murder involving an aristocratic family.

A reasonably interesting mystery with a very nasty conclusion. One point of interest is that writer Russell Lewis (a former child actor) pops in a few literary references, albeit nowhere near as many as in his subsequent "Lewis" episode, "Falling Darkness". However, the aristocratic family under scrutiny is called "Mortmaigne" - an obvious reference to the "Mortmain" family in Dodie Smith's 1948 novel "I Capture The Castle". The daughter of the family, in whom Hathaway seems once to have had some romantic interest, is called Scarlett, presumably after Scarlett O'Hara, whilst the naming of another character "Titus" cannot fail to bring Mervyn Peake to mind. These references, whilst amusing, seem finally rather irrelevant, however.moreless
