Under the control of His Shadow, Kai convinces Stanley to return to the ruins of Cluster in the Light universe to search for more protoblood. They find insect larva, but it is dormant and it can't produce protoblood. So Kai insists on taking it to Mantrid, an infamous scientist that might be able to revive it.moreless

    "Superb"
Mantrid was a superb episode of Lexx and I really enjoyed watching this episode because it maintained the feel of the first season and had enough information for new viewers to grasp what was going on. It was interesting to learn more about how His Divine Shadow came to be and how he was using Kai's body as a vessel. Mantrid was awesome and the special effects were pretty decent and definitely fit with the series which I think is a spectacular display of originality and imagination. I'd also like to mention how awesome the music is in this series. I love the tone it sets and the feeling it generates. I look forward to watching the rest of this season!!!!!!!moreless
  • The Lexx crew are forced to return to the Light Zone as Kai has been taken over by the essence of His Shadow and wants to pass his conciousness on to the last surviving Insect.moreless

    "Great"
The second season gets off to a solid, if unspectacular start, with a noticeably change in both colour & tone, but with the usually wit and sexual innuendo, the series if known for. Unfortunately 'Mantrid' has the job of setting up the rest of the season. Mantrid (Dieter Laser) makes his first appearance in this episode, and actually shows some promise here for the rest of the season - generally he will not go on to be one of the season\'s strongest elements. Oddly, during this episode Habermann acts as if she is going to be in the series all the way through - which creates a nice surprise, but personally preferring Xenia as Xev, I wish they had changed her early on.

The plot continues nicely from \'Gigashadow\' - picking up with the remnants of the Insect Wars and temporarily taking the crew back to the Dark Zone.

The writing is top-notch thankfully, and all the cast act well. There is a significant change in colour and clearly budget from the TV movies, but it works well - creating in this episode a darker and therefore daunting tone to the series.

Hardly one of Season 2\'s best episodes, but a decent start.moreless
