  • Cal Lightman has to find out who murdered a federal judge's daughter, while Gillian Foster has to determine if a test pilot intentionally crashed an experimental test plane.

A Federal Judge's daughter is murdered. Cal Lightman initially suspects the mother but rules her out. They go to her school where the stakes were high and it was common for students to use ADD medication to stay awake and cram for exams. She was killed over cheating on SATs. There was a teacher who would take the test for a student. Danielle was threatening to expose the cheating on the tests and the girl she was threatening killed her.

A test pilot is accused of intentionally crashing a plane. He claims that he didn't do it on purpose, but lost track of time and direction. According to Gillian, he is telling the truth. They suspect his wife is hiding something when they read her body language and facial expressions. The pilot tests positive for a anti-anxiety / anti-depressant drug, but he swears he hasn't been taking it. It turns out that his wife had been dosing him with the drug without his knowledge or consent.

This was a great episode with many plot twists. I hope that this show gets renewed.moreless
  • the sow is going great. nothing special but great. if only he wasn't trying so hard to be like House.

i mean, i don't know how long is this gonna bug me but, besides the bad casting (lightman looks more like a sidekick than a lead) it is bugging me that they are trying to pretend that he is as interesting and weird and unique as house. cos he isn't. he is just a guy who happens to be very very good at what he is doing.

i mean, house is season 5 and getting boring, and i couldn't help but think, instead of this show ever existing, they could go like, house starts consulting some office like the lightman group, i dont know.moreless
  • Episode about succumbing to the problems of achieving.

It was nice to see a bit more in the way of personal background for a leading character in this episode as Cal Lightman has to deal with his 15 year old daughter when she has a party behind his back. The two cases were nicely done too. The murder of a high school student when she discovered one of the teachers was taking tests on behalf of various students was interesting and so was the pilot whose wife thought she was trying to help him by drugging him. The first 3 episodes so far have been quite good and hopefully the show will continue to gather momentum.moreless
  • Great!

Another solid episode of Lie To Me. Once again the acting is great and that extends to the whole cast. The stories are entertaining and make you feel like your learning something about behavior (some of it I already know, but its still fun). I hope we have more of Lightman dealing with his family. It is interesting how the guy who always knows when your lying tries to let the people in his life (such as his teenage daughter) live like normal people (who lie on occasion). Eli and Ria didn't talk this episode, which is disappointing as I like their banter. Overall, another good episode and I look forward to where it goes in the future.moreless
  • Pressure to Succeed.

After only a few episodes, I'm learning that each week we'll be dealing with two "consultation" with some personal business mixed in. This week we are dealing with a pilot being questioned as to whether or not he intentionally down his plane, possibly in a suicide attempt. Then we also have a student at a high class prep school that is murder because she found out that a teacher was taking SAT tests for students. Thrown into the mix is Lightman dealing with his daughter being a rebellious teenager. Overall, we learn that the pilot's wife thought she was helping, a student snapped until the pressure of being top in her class and Lightman has a normal teenage daughter.moreless

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • The pictures of Dr. Lightman are modified from pictures taken on a 1930 expedition to New Guinea, as documented in the 1983 documentary, "First Contact".

  • QUOTES (12)

    • Loker: Well, you're a 15-year-old girl. Statistically speaking you're at the prime age for abusing alcohol, experimenting with drugs, contracting a sexually transmitted disease.
Emily: Wow, you really know how to take all the fun out of rebelling.
Loker: Look on the bright side. You're way more likely to die in a car crash with one of your friends than any of those things.

    • Cal: (about his phone call with Emily) Well, what did you hear then?
Gillian: I heard a typical teenager in the process of forming her self-identity.
Cal: That's psychobabble, that is. She was lying.

    • Cal: How's it going at your mum's?
Emily: Okay, I guess. I mean, you know how mom is. She needs to know everything I'm doing every second.
Cal: Bloody intrusive, isn't it. (pause) What are you doing this very second?

    • Gillian: You okay?
Emily: Yeah. Just my dad being...
Gillian: Yeah, he can do that.
Emily: He never lets me do anything fun.
Gillian: Oh, you mean like having a hundred friends over and getting pulled in by the cops?
Emily: Uh, yeah. Yeah, like that.
Gillian: He knew something was going on when you called, you know.
Emily: He did? Well, why didn't he say anything?
Gillian: If he said something every time you lied to him, oh, he knows he'd lose you.

    • Gillian: It's a possibility but I'll need to assess his psychological state prior to the crash. Do you have any old video tape of him?
NASA Director Schaumburg: We're the Federal Government. We record everything.

    • Cal: 94th percentile. What did she do differently?
Ria: I can tell you one thing. She got murdered the day before she took the test.

    • Ria: You never told me about the eyebrow plucking thing. Where did you read about that?
      Cal: Nowhere.
      Ria: Why not?
      Cal: Because it's complete crap.

    • Ria: When a person's facial expression is not symmetrical across their face, it is likely that they are pretending to feel the emotion. From your article in The Journal of Behavioral Science, 2001.
Cal: Sucking up's not your strong suit, is it?

    • Eli: Russian spies? Oh what's next? Duran Duran? Parachute pants? Because I love the eighties.

    • Eli: Emily? Long time, no see. You look terrible. Awful. Like Gene Simmons when it's really, really humid.

    • Gillian: I'm meeting the deputy chief of NASA. One of their experimental jets crashed and they think the pilot's lying about what happened.
Cal: Oh that's not surprising since the whole space program is based on lies.

    • (Gillian picks up a large wooden object that looks like a spoon)
      Gillian: What's this?
Cal: That's a katika. That's hand carved. Very rare.
Gillian: What do they use it for? Soup?
Cal: Genital presentation. If the man was trying to impress the woman he'd serve himself up on that.

    • Eli: Russian spies? Oh what's next? Duran Duran? Parachute pants? Because I love the eighties.

Duran Duran are an English Rock/Dance band, formed in Birmingham, UK in 1978. They were one of the most commercially successful New Romantic bands of the 1980's. The band has never disbanded, but the line-up has changed over the years. In 1982 Princess Diana declared Duran Duran her favorite band.

Parachute pants were tight, shiny, pants originally created from rip-stop nylon to be used by break dancers. In the early 1990's they were redesigned as extremely baggy pants (largely due to MC Hammer).

    • Eli: Emily? Long time, no see. You look terrible. Awful. Like Gene Simmons when it's really, really humid.

Gene Simmons is an American bass player, vocalist, and actor. He is best known as "The Demon," in the hard rock band Kiss.
