  • Lux goes to her first High School dance.

    10
In this episode of Life Unexpected, the following happens. The Winter Formal is upon us again, and with it comes bad memories for Cate. Jones asks Lux to go and she agrees. Only Bug also comes back into town. But still she goes with Jones.

As the dance ends, Bug turns up with a bunch of flowers for Lux. Cate chaperons the dance, which is at her old high school. Maybe not the best thing to do, especially when Baze turns up. Overall another good episode. I hope soon that we will get some flashbacks about prom or high school or even Lux as a child ion the foster care system.moreless
  • The Winter Formal ghosts finally get laid to rest. If it means Cate will stop screeching, I hope they stay that way.

    9.0
Cate finally deals with her anger, hurt, and humiliation she experienced in high school when Baze rejected her at the scene of the crime, the Winter Formal at their old high school. Sure, she screamed at Baze for several minutes, but she learned something very important from it: that she needs to MOVE ON.

Same with Lux. Her anger at Cate stems from the past and unless you have a time machine, the past can't be fixed. She needs to move on.

Hopefully this is enough closure so that the two characters aren't always sniping and yelling at people at the drop of a hat because that's what turned me off a couple episodes in. The pilot was wonderful, but after that, it seemed to be Lux yells at Cate, Cate yells at Baze, Ryan gets hurt and/or lied to, Baze annoys Cate at the workplace AND repeat. Boring. At least, Math gets a dance with Cate at the Winter Formal. And Bug put aside his insecurities for the dance. I like the characters and the series, but I've been losing interest. With this episode, I feel like they're finally going somewhere with the story. Hopefully, they won't fall back into the old pattern.moreless

    • Lux: Is this a sex talk?
Baze: It's...it's more of an anti-sex talk.
Abby: There are many other ways to get the same feeling without actually having sex. Um...flexible shower heads, vibrating back massagers, the spin cycle of the front-load washing machine. (Lux and Baze stare are her)

    • Cate: Math, I am sorry. I mean, I'm the worst chaperone date ever. Even sixteen years later, I have a way of ruining the night and still making it about me and Baze.
Math: If Baze had gotten me pregnant, I'd probably make it about him, too. That and a medical miracle.

    • Baze: Come on, Math. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to sleep with Cate...again. It's just, I went through a lot that day. Emotions were heightened, you weren't exactly on my mind. And quite frankly if you were, I think we would have a much more troubling situation on our hands.

    • Baze: Seriously, what is your problem, dude? You still upset that I slept with Cate?
Math: You knew I liked her!
Baze: In high school! How was I supposed to know that after all this time you were serial killer-obsessed with her?
Cate: (walks in to the bar) Obsessed with who?
      Baze: Hey!
Math: Cher...but not in a gay way.
      Baze: Is there another way?

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Cate: (to Math, watching students enter the formal) I guess skank is the new black. When we went to our dance all the girls, they wanted to look like the Heathers.

This is a reference to the 1989 comedy Heathers. The movie's plot centered on a group of four girls who were part of a popular clique at an Ohio high school.
