    • QUOTES (2)

      • Lillie: This is a waltz?

        Bentham: Yes.

        Lillie: I don't know how ...

        Clara: To dance a waltz?

Mrs Le Breton: They're never played at our dances.

Bentham: We in the metropolis have been exposed to waltzes for a number of years now and we've suffered no serious moral effects.

      • Langtry: Consumption is a cruel disease. It heightens and purifies the beauty of its victims while it eats away their strength.

    • NOTES (4)

      • The credits for each episode contain the phrase "From an idea by Mike Smith". This seems the best place to acknowledge this credit as it would be inappropriate to put it in the crew or cast listing.

      • The 1975 series only examined Bertie and Lillie's story briefly. Taking them from the party at which they met, through her early days as an actress and stopping at the point that her career on the stage was secure.

      • Mssr's Gorrie and Butler had been so impressed with Francesca Annis' performance as Lillie that they wrote this series with only her in mind to play the role.

      • In 1975, John Gorrie and David Butler helped create the historical series Edward the Seventh (also known as Edward the King and The Royal Victorians) about the life of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and, especially, their son Bertie. Episodes seven and eight of this series (called "Dearest Prince" and "The Royal Quadrille", respectively) told, in part, the story of Bertie's relationship with Lillie Langtry. Both Gorrie and Butler became fascinated with her story and three years later they were able to bring her life to the small screen.
