    • TRIVIA (0)

    • QUOTES (5)

      • Bertie: You're not living up to the motto you chose for this place. Look! (Reads the text on the painted window) "They say. What say they? Let them say."

Lillie: Let them say, as long as they can't prove anything.

      • Lillie: The Prince says we're more than fortunate to have two such statesmen as yourself and Mr Gladstone living today.

Disraeli: Oh, I wholeheartedly agree ... with half of that remark.

      • Sarah Bernhardt: Do you love the Prince?

Lillie: No, I admire him. I need him to be what I am.

      • Oscar Wilde: I was at the Academy last Varnishing Day. I've never seen so many academicians, all disguised as artists.

      • Edward: I just wonder sometimes how it is all going to end. What we are. What we've become. But I'm not complaining.

    • NOTES (5)

      • Cheryll Campbell is the second actor to appear in both Edward the Seventh and Lillie in a different role. She played Beatrice in the earlier series.

      • In Whistler's studio we see a reproduction of his painting 'Nocturne in Blue and Gold: The Battersea Bridge'

      • This episode opens with a view of what was to become a hallmark of the Edwardian era, HUGE MEALS. Eight course breakfasts, twelve course dinners. "Upstairs, Downstairs" and "The Duchess of Duke Street" give us the same glimpse of this era's obsession.
The only drawback to having Denis Lill portray Bertie is that his svelte frame never shows the consequences of this gluttony.

      • The Forman Archives receive a credit as the Technical Advisor for the Orders and Medals worn in this and subsequent episodes.

      • The home that Lillie and Bertie shared is now a country manor hotel near Bournemouth. Visit their website at
