    • QUOTES (3)

      • Lillie: (about Oscar Wilde) You could put on one of his plays. You own the rights.

Alexander: The public wouldn't stand for it. Not yet, you know that. They still haven't forgiven him for ...

        Lillie: Not being a hypocrite?

      • Lillie: I think husbands should be free to spend as much time with other women as they want. If the wife consents. Besides, it makes them far more attentive when they come home.

      • Prince of Wales: Still married?

        Lillie: Still supporting a husband.

    • NOTES (3)

      • In a well done piece of editing and storytelling we see a copy of a Chicago newspaper dated December 5th, 1900, just before Lillie comes on stage to announce the death of a dear friend. Oscar Wilde died, in Paris, November 30th.

      • This episode begins just a few days after the horse race that was shown at the end of "Mr Jersey". Somehow Lillie managed to age several years, while celebrating her horses victory. I'm just pointing out that the decision to do the aging makeup all at once, rather than adding it on gradually is a little jarring. For one thing I feel sure that Francesca wanted to hold off having to act in it as long as possible.
This is, also, another example of what having the whole series on disc can cause. When you had to wait a week to see the next episode this change would not have seemed so drastic.

      • Francesca Annis and James Warwick would go on to act together on the small screen several more times in the years to come. First in "Why Didn't They Ask Evans" and then as Tommy and Tuppence Beresford in "Partners in Crime".
