Lilo and Mertle go head to head in a battle of the sports. First the game is baseball and Lilo kicks Pleakley from the team because he's very very bad in favour of a baseball playing experiment. Pleakley is understanding, Lilo feels somewhat bad, but a bet with Mertle has her Elvis records on the line for the chance to crow about winning Mertle's beloved dolls!
Mertle, after discovering the baseball playing experiment pulls a fast one, since she doesn't want to lose and picks up Gantu for her team and switches the game to basketball. Halfway through the game, in which Lilo is getting her butt kicked, Pleakley shows his very very good at Basketball and helps Lilo's team win after giving a lecture about playing sports for fun being more important than playing for the sake of winning alone.
The 'friends are more important than winning' message is a common one in kids shows. It's been done before and surely it will be done again. But its a good message. Even Gantu realizes trying your best is all you can do and says as much.
The point of sports for kids is fun and learning. This is a message more parents should receive as there are more and more ridiculous incidents of parents creating fusses at their children's games. The only sour note, I felt, was at the end Lilo is carting away Mertle's dolls to a local children's hospital, that maybe they should leave one with Mertle.. and then, naaaah. Its very easy to be generous with someone else's belongings. I felt that the right message would have been to return all of them and say that Mertle *should* choose one to donate to other kids but not "force" her into anything. But just my two cents Canadians. ;)moreless
