Linus The Lionhearted!

Show Summary

A Saturday Morning cartoon that featured characters originally developed as advertising mascots for Post Cereals. The individual segments were: (1) Linus, King of Beasts, where Linus (voiced by Sheldon Leonard) ruled the jungle from his barber shop throne. His subjects included Dinny Kangaroo, Croc Holiday, Sasha Grouse, and the annoying Billie Bird. (2) Loveable Truly, the mailman, who protected dogs from the nefarious dogcatcher (and former silent movie star) Richard Harry Nearly (3) Rory Raccoon, Hometown Hero; who was charged with protecting the corn fields from C. Claudius Crow, (4) So-Hi, the little Chinese boy; who introduced (and occasionally starred in) comic take-offs of old fables and fairy tales, and (5) The Company; stories featuring the entire cast which aired throughout the show in multiple parts as transition material between the other cartoons and the Post cereal commercials. Midway during the first season, the Rory Raccoon segments were replaced by Sugar Bear cartoons, where the laid-back banjo-strumming bear had adventures with Granny Goodwitch, the dimwitted Benji Wolf, and the evil Mervyn the Magician. The show was popular enough with kids in its first season that it prompted Post to commission a second season of episodes. However, during the 1965-1966 season the show went up the against the Beatles cartoons on ABC and got clobbered in the ratings prompting Post to end production. The show aired in reruns on ABC on Sunday mornings for a few years, then went into syndication before the FCC ordered it off the air on the grounds that kids couldn't distinguish between the cartoons and the commercials. For the record, Linus hawked Crispy Critters, Loveable Truly delivered the letters for Alpha-Bits, Rory Raccoon kept the cornfield safe for Post Toasties, So-Hi promoted Rice Krinkles, and of course Sugar Bear (the only of the group still around today) sells Golden Crisp.moreless
