  • The Ingalls family are forced to leave Walnut Grove due to the terrible economic conditions which are present and decide to settle in Winoka which is where Mary and Adam are teaching at the school for the blind.

When the Ingalls family arrive in the bustling city of Winoka, the only good thing from Charles's perspective is that they can now be close to Mary again. We see Albert (as Albert!) for the first time and soon, Charles and Caroline find employment co-managing a large hotel owned by the unpleasant Mr. Standish, who also owns quite a few of the other buildings and businesses in town, including the saloon, the noise from which drives Charles insane as he is used to the peace and quiet of country living and has always greatly disliked the city.

He is not afraid to take on a couple of the less savoury locals, particularly when they don't behave in a gentlemanly way towards Caroline and soon, thimgs are looking up immeasurably when the Graveys and the Oleson's arrive to settle in Winoka as well as they too have lost everything in Walnut Grove.
