The old Pike house has a reputation for being haunted and the children of Walnut Grove avoid it like the plague as they are very scared of old Mr. Pike, who has lived there alone for many years.

Nellie, being Nellie, dares Laura to approach the house and touch it. At first, Laura does not wish to do so, but, after constant ribbing from the other children decides that she will. Unfortunately for her, her dog, Jack, sees a cat and chases it in through a window, making it necesssary for Laura to go inside and get him out. While she is in there, Mr. Pike comes home and Laura is, at first, terrified, but, after talking to the old man over several visits, she learns that his wife, a former stage dancer, has been away for many years, but that he is expecting her back any day. After doing some checking at the theatre, Laura learns that Mrs. Pike has been dead for many years and she must gently convince the old man of this fact so that he can get on with his life.

A good episode, and very well acted, even though it was somewhat predictable. Melissa Gilbert has the ability to adapt perfectly to any script that she is given, which is a must for any actor.moreless

    • In this episode, John Anderson plays an old man who is obsessed with a music box that plays the same tune over and over again and reminds him of his long-dead wife. In a bizarre coincidence, Anderson plays an elderly man grieving his dead wife in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Survivors" and he uses a very similar repetitive tune to block the empathic abilities of Deanna Troi.
