Little House on the Prairie

Season 1 Episode 8

Ma's Holiday

Aired Wednesday 12:00 AM Nov 06, 1974 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • In a few scenes--such as when Carrie is crying in the middle of the night and when Mr. Edwards is reading her a story--you will notice that she is wearing her nightgown completely backwards. The string part that gets tied is in the front instead of the back, and there is a rather large opening that shows a very close-up shot of Carrie's lower chest in the scene where she is crying. It's very noticeable and inappropriate.

    • This is the episode where Mr. Edwards infamously nails Carrie to the roof. Lindsay Greenbush played Carrie in that scene, and she says it's one of her earliest memories on the show.

    • Those watching this episode should be advised that the close-up shots of little Carrie happily eating the rattlesnake (with her mouth completely open) are really disgusting and, quite frankly, pretty unnecessary.

    • Notice the scene where Mr. Edwards is trying to put Carrie to bed, but the little girl is giggling and squirming all over. It's a close-up shot of Carrie, but you can clearly hear Melissa Gilbert (Laura)'s voice doing the giggling, and yet when they show Laura in the next shot, her face is completely somber, and she shows no signs of having been laughing a few seconds ago.

    • This episode focused very largely on the Ingalls family and Mr. Edwards. In fact, the only other recurring characters who appeared very briefly were Grace Snider and Nels Oleson.

    • This is the first and only episode where we really see baby Carrie cry (actresses Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush were notoriously smiley and happy children), and it doesn't even sound entirely authentic. It didn't sound nearly as disturbing as baby Grace's crying in later seasons. Sidney Greenbush was the twin used for that scene.

    • Listen to the voices of the unseen child actors at the play Charles and Caroline attend: that's June Foray, the legendary voice-over artist who gave life to Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Natasha, Davey from Davy and Goliath, and the original Chatty Cathy doll.

  • Quotes

    • Laura: (to Mr. Edwards as he is telling a story about himself) But you didn't die, did you?
Mary: Of course he didn't die!
Laura: Well, he might have and then come back to life again. They do that a lot in the Bible!

    • Laura: (when Mr. Edwards is working on the roof) Mr. Edwards, Carrie shouldn't be up there!
Mary: She's too little! She'll fall off!
Mr. Edwards: Oh, there's no chance of that. You see, I've got her dress nailed to the roof!

    • Mr. Edwards: Now, you see, if asked outright, I wouldn't lie. If your Ma and Pa asked me, "Edwards, did you shoot a hole in the roof while we was away?" I'd own right up to it. I just don't see any need to open the topic if they don't.

  • Notes

    • Filming Locations: Filmed at Big Sky Ranch, Simi Valley and Paramount Studios, Hollywood, California.

    • Featured characters: The Ingalls family and Mr. Edwards.

    • Historical Goof! In this first season episode, Mr. Edwards tells the Ingalls girls that he was given the nickname "Sitting Bull" by a Sioux Indian and fought Custer at Little Big Horn. The real Battle of Little Big Horn took place in July 1876. In season 2, however, the town celebrates the nation's 100th birthday in episode #44, "Centennial", which would had to have taken place in July 1876. Therefore, tale Mr. Edwards tells was regarding an event which could not possibly have happened yet.
