Charles: We need to have food. As soon as there's a lull in the storm, I'll go out hunting again.
Caroline: And if there's not a lull?
Charles: (long pause) There's always the horses.
-
Sheriff: Look, Ingalls, I've said I'm sorry. What do you want?
Charles: People like you have taken everything away from that man. His freedom, his land, almost his life. Don't tell me you're sorry. Tell him.
-
Sheriff: I could use a bowl of that soup or something.
Caroline: It's all gone. I gave the last of it to the girls.
Sheriff: There'd have been some left if you hadn't fed that Indian.
Charles: He earned what he got.
Sheriff: Ingalls, you're going to rue the day that you let that murderer go.
Caroline: Murderer? You keep saying that. Who did he murder?
Sheriff: Who? He was one of the Sioux chiefs in the '62 uprising. Tried and convicted and sentenced to hang.
Charles: Then, why didn't he?
Sheriff: Well, Abe Lincoln! He stuck his nose into it. He called them Sioux warriors, that they believed in what they were fighting for. So, he pardoned the whole bunch of 'em.
Charles: No different than the men who wore Confederate uniforms who fought for what they believed in.
Sheriff: That was different.
Charles: President Lincoln didn't think so.
Sheriff: This is a reservation jumper who hates all white men.
Charles: Then why did he save my life?
-
Caroline: (playing with the kids) Simon says, "Touch your ears." Touch your head. (Carrie puts her hands on her head) Ooh! (laughs)
Laura: Carrie, Simon didn't say, so you're out.
Carrie: Mama said so!
-
Laura: (arguing with Mary) Besides, you're not supposed to argue over a game. Right, Ma?
Caroline: You have my permission to argue if it will help you keep warm.
