Laura is asked to become a temporary teacher in a diffrent town than Walnut Grove. Eliza Jane suggest that Almonzo drives Laura to school and back at the end of every week she's there. On first trip back home Almonzo starts to look at her with a new light, seeing that she is now a woman. When it is time to go back to school Almonzo asks Laura to go to the church social with him as her escort. She says she'll think about it.
Almonzo starts to think about nothing else but Laura. Two days before the church social Almonzo can't take anymore of not knowing if she's going with him or not. So he goes to visit her at school. When he walks in he sees a student of her, who is studying medicene, showing her how flexible the ribe cage is by feeling her waist. Almonzo thinks the worst and puches the boy. Laura becomes furious. Almonzo goes back to Walnut Grove and talks to Charles telling him what happend and to ask him if he will pick up Laura the next day with the excuse that he thought it would be better if Charles picked her up since it was her birthday.
While riding back home Charles tells Laura that there is a very good chance of Almonzo being in love with her (since he confessed to Charles that he was starting to like Laura more than a friend). Laura becomes so exited that she tells him to hurry home.
When they arrive at the church social Almonzo is no where to be seen. Charles goes over to Eliza Jane, who is sitting in a chair waiting to be asked to dance, to ask where Almonzo was. She tells him that he's around here somewhere and Albert asks her to dance. Laura finds Almonzo sitting out back of the resturant thinking. Laura sits down beside him and they talk. Almonzo apoligizes about the way he acted. Laura tells him not to worry about it. When Almonzo gives Laura a present, a shawl, Laura says she feels that she is wearing his colors. The two then kiss. Laura asks Almonzo to dance and he, of course, accepts. Charles says he has a feeling Laura will be getting married soon and Caroline says she's glad, she always want to call him Grandpa!
