Little House on the Prairie

Season 2 Episode 6

The Campout

Aired Wednesday 12:00 AM Nov 19, 1975 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Harriet thinks that Mary and Laura have an unfair advantage in collecting leaves for the school, so she thinks that Nellie and Willie should go where Mary and Laura are going, but according to that logic, all of the other students in the school should get to go to that same spot and have the same opportunity to collect leaves that the Ingalls and Oleson children have, but no one even points this out to Harriet.

    • On their camping trip, the Ingalls and Oleson families are seen traveling where there are snow-capped mountains. There are no mountains whatsoever in Minnesota.

    • There are a couple of noticable lighting irregularities in this episode. First, the Olesons supposedly meet the Ingalls at 6:00 in the morning to leave for the camping trip, yet the shadows on the ground are not elongated at all. Clearly, this scene was filmed near noontime. Also, in the scene around the campfire, it's pitch black behind Ma and the girls, but when they cut to Mrs. Oleson and her children, the viewer can see daylight through the trees in the background. Though the two groups are implied to be carrying on two different conversations at once, they clearly weren't filmed simultaneously.

  • Quotes

    • Harriet: It's been hours.
Caroline: Nels and Charles will find them.
Harriet: Soon, I hope. You know, it's not just that the girls are probably lost, it's just...this whole thing is my fault.
      Caroline: I don't see how.
Harriet: Well, it wasn't Nels's idea to come on this trip; it was mine.
      Caroline: I knew that.
Harriet: You did? Well, I just feel like this entire thing wouldn't have happened if I had just been the kind of person that I should've been.
Caroline: Don't think like that! Nothing's happened!
Harriet: Well, if I had been as nice to you as I should've been, if I hadn't been...oh, so snickety and just plain mean...
Caroline: It takes two to argue.
Harriet: If our girls come back from this-
      Caroline: They will.
Harriet: I promise you, that when you come into our store again, I will be a different and better person. I will be. I never realized it before, but, I do like you. I really do like you.

    • Nellie: It's all your fault, Laura Ingalls!
      Laura: It was not!
Nellie: It was, too! If you hadn't bumped me, I wouldn't have slipped!
      Laura: I didn't bump you!
Nellie: You did too! And then you pushed my head under!
      Laura: I did not!
Nellie: Yes, you did! You tried to drown me!
Laura: What I did, I saved you. I can swim. I could've swam to shore. As a matter of fact, if it wasn't for you, I never would've gotten my feet wet! (Nellie starts crying) What are you bawling about?
      Nellie: I don't know.
      Laura: Well, then, stop bawling!
      Nellie: I can't!
Laura: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be so mean.
Nellie: I don't blame you. I'm positively hateful.
