  • Caleb Hodgekiss is a man with a murky past and thinks that all his Christmases have come at once when he comes across an ill Reverend Alden doing charitable works.

    9.0
Reverend Alden is doing his bit for a nearby town and its people who have lost just about everything. While on his way to collect donations from the people of Walnut Grove, he falls ill and ends up with the shiftless Caleb Hodgekiss (Johnny Cash) and his wife (played by June Carter Cash.) When Hodgekiss learns of the Reverend's intended journey and the reason for it, he decides to 'help himself' to whatever offerings they may have in Walnut Grove by masquerading as 'Brother Hodgekiss', a man bent on doing The Lord's work as Reverend Alden is, at present, unable.

Although mostly poor themselves, the people of Walnut Grove give all that they can to help their neighbours, but Hodgekiss ends up giving more than he realised when he helps an ailing widow who wishes to do want to live again, and gives Alisha Edwards the courage she needs to accept the loss of her beloved puppy.

A superb episode in just about every respect, and wonderful work by Johnny Cash.moreless
  • For starters how can you not enjoy watching "The Man in Black", Johnny Cash Guest Star along with his wonderful wife June Carter Cash!?

    10
Being a huge fan of Johnny Cash, I felt this episode reflected back on Cash's life- going from drug addicted and losing his faith, to becoming friends and eventually married to June Carter who not only helped him quit a deadly drug addiction but also get him to find his faith again even stronger than before.

The character Cash plays is an ex-con who initially sets out to rob the good folks of Walnut Grove against his wife's wishes (played by his real life wife June) but in the end he realizes there is reward in goodness and instead ends up helping many of the townsfolk while pretending to be a minister. Not only did I find the story's plot educational, but it also had two legends play Guest Stars!!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (8)

    • The song "In The Garden (He Walks with Me)", performed in the final scene as Johnny and June Carter Cash are seen leaving the church, was a hit for Merle Haggard in the 1970's. Haggard was a good friend of the Cashes, and this may be why the song was selected for use in this episode. It's technically out of place, though, since the song wasn't written until 1913.

    • Nitpick/Goof: Nels' bloodhound changes genders in this episode. In Season 1's Family Quarrel, Nels calls him "Boy," but in this episode, the dog is about to have a litter of pups. One can only assume that it's the same animal.

    • Starting with this season, Mary has a new dress for Church, and it's a lavender color. Apparently, she has outgrown the blue dress, which is from when Ma made the matching dresses for Mary and Laura in Season 1's Country Girls. It's reasonable to believe that Laura is now wearing Mary's blue dress, since she is taller now and likely outgrew her own. You'd think little Carrie would get the smaller blue dress now, which would serve as some nice symbolism and would be more in line with the fact that children in those days relied heavily on their older siblings' hand-me-downs. Unfortunately, Carrie never wore it.

    • Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter Cash play the roles of Caleb and Mattie Hodgekiss in this episode. Ironically, these would be the exact same first names of African American doctor Caleb Ledoux and his wife Mattie, five years later, in Season 8's Dark Sage.

    • In a 2006 interview, Melissa Sue Anderson stated that she hated the straw hat she was told to wear in this episode; she referred to it as "The Frisbee."

    • In this episode, Alicia Sanderson-Edwards greives over the death of her puppy, which her mother let her and her brothers have in the Season 2 episode Remember Me.

    • Caleb and Mattie Hodgekiss are played by real-life married couple Johnny and June Cash. Both of them had previous marriages before getting together--Johnny was married once before, and June was married twice before. The two of them remained happily married to each other for the rest of their lives.

    • Nitpick: Johnny Cash is wearing 1970s-style mutton chops, which men at that time (1870s-80s) did not wear.
