  • Isaac is a master craftsman with wood and does some beautiful work but he is also Jewish and when Albert befriends him, difficulties arise at school.

    7.5
Isaac is very old, a widower with one son who misses his wife a great deal. He is also the best wood craftsman for many miles around, taking great pride in each individual piece. After his son moves away to marry, Isaac takes Albert under his wing and begins to teach him exactly what can be done with wood. Albert thoroughly enjoys the lessons and the budding friendship with the old man. He learns more than just craftsmanship from him too.

Unfortunately for Albert, racism and bigotry are alive and well in Walnut Grove and he finds himself teased and bullied by his classmates for associating with 'The Jew'. Naturally, it is Harriet Oleson who leads the charge.

When Isaac becomes ill, he starts to make a very special coffin with Albert's help. What Albert doesn't realise is that it is for Isaac himself as he is having heart problems and he knows his time is near.

Albert is very sad when his friend passes away but he is determined to finish the coffin and do a fine job of it.

A lovely episode which shows us how friendships can be formed no matter what the barriers.moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • This is one of the few episodes when someone else but Laura does the voice over at the end of the episode. In this case, it is Albert.

    • Pa gives Laura a harsh lecture over dinner about prejudices against Jews (and others). Michael Landon, whose real name was Eugene Orowitz, certainly may have been speaking from the heart. In interviews, he often talked about being the only Jewish child in school, and getting beat up because of it.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Larabee: There ain't nothing wrong having prejudice against Jews. It's self-defense!
Jonathan: I agree with you, Larabee. I'm prejudice myself.
      Larabee: Really? Against whom?
      Jonathan: Against short redneck farmers.

    • Albert: I had a little run-in.
      Charles: Who with?
      Albert: The Larabee boys.
      Charles: What? Both of them?
Caroline: Well, what made you do a foolish thing like that?
Albert: My legs. They weren't fast enough to get away!

  • NOTES (3)

    • Actor Tony Becker, portraying Zeke in this episode and in The Craftsman, is better known as Elizabeth Walton's boyfriend in The Waltons, and for starring for four seasons in the acclaimed TV drama Tour of Duty.

    • Ted Voightlander won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Series for this episode.

    • David Rose won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series for this episode.
