  • Charles and Almanzo start a freight business to Sleepy Eye and turn their argument about the faster route into a bet.

This is the sort of episode many people would complain did nothing to the running storyline and was just plain silly, but I found it to be very amusing and a ton of fun. I was home sick one day when this was on, and that was the first time I saw the episode. It was a great episode to just make my day and give me something to laugh at. If you like the really sweet scenes, you'll be proud of Almanzo for not taking all the goods away from the starving family. Its just a story of playing tricks on each other and jokes. Silly? Yes. But entertaining? Yes. And it was nice to have small scenes working other characters that aren't as starring in there-- we see Mary, Andy Garvey, and others. I really enjoyed this.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Since the wager was who could get to Sleepy Eye the fastest, Charles would still win, since he arrived first. He may not have gotten there by noon, but he still beat Almanzo. Why Charles had to buy Almanzo supper, then, is a mystery.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Charles: (carrying Kavendish on his shoulders across the creek) You're heavier than you look, old man!
Kavendish: And you're dumber than you look!

    • Charles: You sound like my wife.
Kavendish: I didn't think a man like you would be married to someone with common sense.

    • Almanzo: You know, I thought you'd be more understanding. They were starving!
Charles: I was more understanding, until you ordered another steak, and then another slice of peach pie!

  • NOTES (2)

    • The old mill/house where Almonzo finds the poor family eating "his" goods is the same place where Charles and Jonathan were held hostage in Season 5's Mortal Mission.

    • Eddie Quillan has a recurring role in this episode, adding humor as the grumpy elderly man Kavendish. Previously he played Judge Parker, presiding over the Garveys' divorce proceedings in The High Cost of Being Right.
