  • A timely reminder that it is truly what is inside that counts and that no book should be judged by its cover alone.

Amelia Bevins is a new student at the livery school but she has what she considers to be a very dark secret; her father is morbidly obese and she is ashamed of him, which is made worse when Laura and others, not aware that the large man is their new classmate's father, laugh and make fun of him.

Mr. Bevins, it turns out, is a kind and loving man with a heart of gold who is always doing something for others, particularly the staff and students of the blind school, all of whom think very highly of him.

When he overhears a discussion between his wife and daughter where Amelia pours out her embarrassment, he decides to pretend to go and work on the railways when in fact he is living and working at the blind school and is not allowing himself to be seen outside. A fall through a worn out roof means an urgent operation is required to save his life and Amelia soon realises how much she really loves her father and what a special man he is.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Pa and Ma must really have been getting used to the noise and dangers of city life. Right after Laura goes up to bed, a succession of three loud (nearby) gunshots is heard. Pa and Ma don't even flinch, let alone run upstairs to check on their children. In fact, Caroline just makes a joke about all the noise and goes on sipping her coffee casually--very uncharacteristic for two people who say they hate the loudness of Winoka.

    • When Laura goes to Amelia's house to work on their essays, the viewer can clearly tell that the scene was filmed in the space that serves as the Ingalls' hotel rooms. Additionally, if you look at the wall behind Amelia's desk and to the left, there's a huge gap in the wall, and the two pieces of wood trim on them don't line up. These are clearly partition-style sound stage walls, and when they were put up for this scene, they weren't alligned properly. The gap in the wall is a goof for another reason: all walls at that time were plastered; there wouldn't have been gaps (as with drywall) of any kind.

    • In the first school scene, where Laura accidentally started reading the wrong thing because she was chatting with Amelia, notice Melissa Gilbert (Laura) is trying very hard not to laugh, and Matthew Laborteaux (Albert) is cracking up right behind her. There really wouldn't be a reason for Laura to be laughing, though, so you can tell that these two kids must have been cracking up about something else in the middle of filming.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Smitty: Oh, hey, Bevins, I've got a real good one for you today! You see, there's this fat guy, and-
John: I've got no time. I'm taking my daughter to school, and I don't want her to be late.
Smitty: Well, it'll only take a minute, and it's a real good one.
John: Smitty, take my word for it. I've heard them all.

    • Laura: (when Amelia offers her a cookie) Mmmm! These are wonderful!
Amelia: My Ma gets them from your restaurant.
Laura: No wonder they're so good. I help make them!

    • Laura: Adam! Adam! You better get down to the blind school. Mary's madder than a wet hen!
Adam: Not having been raised on a farm, I'm not quite sure how mad that is.
      Laura: Trust me, it's mad!

    • Adam: I love your mother's fried chicken. And I love your mother's daughter.
      Mary: Which one?
Adam: This one. (kisses her) You know what I like best about this school?
      Mary: What?
Adam: I can kiss you in front of the whole class, and no one would know a thing.
      Mary: Adam, you're terrible!

    • Caroline: (when Laura is crying about the jokes she made about Amelia's father) All right, that's enough now.
Laura: But we didn't know he was her father.
Caroline: The point isn't whether you knew, is it? The point is that we should never make cruel comments about anyone.
      Laura: It wasn't just me.
Caroline: Oh, you know better than to use an excuse like that!
      Laura: I know.
Caroline: Tomorrow, when you see Amelia at school, I'm sure you will apologize.
      Laura: What will I say?
Caroline: You thought of the jokes. You can think of an apology.

    • Laura: (about Amelia and her family) I don't understand.
Charles: Well, it sounds like maybe some kind of family problem, and the Bevins' don't want people talking.
      Laura: You mean a divorce?
Caroline: Your father means he doesn't know. And whatever it is, it's none of our business.

    • Amelia: (to her mother as her father listens outside the door) Why did we have to move here? I hate it here!
Bess: Your father had to find work. You know that.
Amelia: When we were on the farm, we were away. The children didn't see him.
Bess: Amelia, I won't have you saying such things! Now, your father loves you. He tries his best.
Amelia: I don't want him to meet my friends. I don't want them to see him. And I don't want them to know he's my father!

  • NOTES (3)

    • Actress Julie Ann Haddock, here portraying Amelia, later played tomboy Cindy Weber on the NBC series The Facts of Life. Haddock quit acting in the mid-1980's, when she was a teenager.

    • Goof: In this episode, actress Michelle Downey is seen in a recurring role as a young blonde-haired girl at the blind school named Sue. Mary refers to her as Sue Farley at one point, but starting with the Season 5 episode The Wedding, she was known as Susan Goodspeed.

    • This is the first of three episodes that deal with an obese person. The second is Season 6's Annabelle, then Season 8's For the Love of Nancy.
