Mary is still seriously ill and requires more surgery due to an infection. Caroline takes a job in the hospital laundry to help play for the mounting hospital bills.

Meanwhile, Charles, realising that more money is going to be required, goes off with Edwards to work for a blasting company in the highly dangerous job of powder monkey so that he can earn the maximum amount of money and send it to Caroline back in Rochester so that Mary can have her surgery and post-operative care.

Finally, Mary's health begins to improve and soon, she is able to return home to Walnut Grove and the rest of her family.moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Fans of the Die Hard movie series may recognize the actor portraying the Chinese crew leader, Wing. He's James Shigeta, and he played the ill-fated company president Mr. Takagi in the original Die Hard film.

    • Mr. Franklin, the big "boss" of the tunneling project, is played by actor James B. Sikking, who would go on to star as blundering Lt. Howard Hunter in Hill Street Blues.

    • At one point, when Mary is in the hospital, she starts twisting and turning in bed, and is all sweaty when Ma feels her forehead and runs for the doctor. But when the doctor comes in, Mary is completely still and calm.

  • QUOTES (1)

    • Caroline: (reading Mary a letter from Charles) "My sweet Mary, how I wish I could be with you right now instead of putting words to paper, so far away. I love you, darling, and you are in my thoughts and prayers constantly...." (Caroline notices Mary looks upset) Mary, why don't I put this away for now? You can read it yourself when you're feeling better.
Mary: Ma....just in case something happens, if I'm not here when Pa comes....I want you to let him know I love him.
Caroline: Mary....Mary, look at me. What are you talking about?
Mary: Ma, tell Pa that I love him, and that I tried, but--
Caroline: Mary! Stop talking like that!
Mary: I'm not getting any better, Ma. I can feel it.
Caroline: Mary, I don't care what you think you feel. Your doctor tells me you're doing fine.
Mary: But Ma, just in case something does happen, I want you to tell Pa I love him--
Caroline: If you want to tell your Pa something, you're gonna have to tell him yourself. And to do that, you have to stop feeling sorry for yourself and get well!
Mary: I guess I did sound that way, didn't I?
Caroline: That's okay. That's normal. Everyone feels that way sometimes. (Mary smiles, and Caroline smiles back) That's my girl.
