Caroline: (reading Mary a letter from Charles) "My sweet Mary, how I wish I could be with you right now instead of putting words to paper, so far away. I love you, darling, and you are in my thoughts and prayers constantly...." (Caroline notices Mary looks upset) Mary, why don't I put this away for now? You can read it yourself when you're feeling better.
Mary: Ma....just in case something happens, if I'm not here when Pa comes....I want you to let him know I love him.
Caroline: Mary....Mary, look at me. What are you talking about?
Mary: Ma, tell Pa that I love him, and that I tried, but--
Caroline: Mary! Stop talking like that!
Mary: I'm not getting any better, Ma. I can feel it.
Caroline: Mary, I don't care what you think you feel. Your doctor tells me you're doing fine.
Mary: But Ma, just in case something does happen, I want you to tell Pa I love him--
Caroline: If you want to tell your Pa something, you're gonna have to tell him yourself. And to do that, you have to stop feeling sorry for yourself and get well!
Mary: I guess I did sound that way, didn't I?
Caroline: That's okay. That's normal. Everyone feels that way sometimes. (Mary smiles, and Caroline smiles back) That's my girl.
