Beginner's Luck
AIRED:
Spanky's mom has aspirations of her son becoming a great actor, so she enters him in a local talent contest. Not wanting an actor's life, Spanky arranges for the gang to sabotage his performance with noise-makers and pea-shooters. At the contest, Spanky meets Marianne, whose mother can't afford to buy her a dress she's been wanting, and wants very badly to win the prize money. This turns out to be impossible, as Marianne is overcome with stage fright, so Spanky decides to win the prize for her. The gang, however, doesn't get the message about his change of plans, and destroys his act, anyway.moreless

  • BEGINNER'S LUCK IS PURE SADISTIC SLAPSTICK!!

For anyone who has ever seen this classic Our Gang comedy, you will never forget it! I won't write a synopsis....( others here have already done that) but the erotic punch of this short cannot be under estimated. It really has alot of S&M flavor to it.....overbearing Stage mother..pushing her little boy into a recital HE DOESN'T WANT TO DO!! Friends of the boy who show up at an amature night to ruin his performance! A sadistic, howling crowd who goes on during his performance to rip the kid apart!! And then the climax of the short where the Stagemother gets her comeuppence!! You will never experiance a more brutal audience responce to seeing an actor FLOP in your life...LOL. It really as an appeal to all of us comedy sadists who LOVE to see some poor slob get the WORKS on stage!! ( A TRUE SLAPSTICK MASTERPIECE!)moreless
  • I enjoy all little rascals episodes, some more than others. I like this one because it showed spanky wanting to more for someone else who needed the money more than he did or the feeling that he was doing this more for his mother.moreless

I have to say this was one in which seeing a woman have her dress pulled off of her by accident was something I found stimulating as a young pre-teen. I wonder if the young male actors on the set saw this the same way. It was one I still enjoy today. I know this was done with laughs in mind but understand back then this was very risque to have a woman on the set in her slip. Please, don't judge me because what I am writing, I enjoyed the episode, especially when spanky was fending off a barrage of spitters with his shield. it is just what I remember most about this episode.moreless

This is one of the funniest ,but certainly not the best of the Little Rascals shorts.

It was rushed into production after the very succesful "Mike Fright" released late the previous year.It seems theater owners wanted another short where the gang was involved in a show .So instead of a ameatur radio show this one involves an ameatur stage show ,where children sing or dance to win a prize.

Spanky has been entered into this show by his dominering stage mother without his knowledge or consent. The gang comes to his aide by offering to sit up front and heckle his performance with peashooters and noisemakers.Spanky is overjoyed with this .Spanky's mother has been crowing to her friends that Spanky will win first prize and even says to Spanky's grandma "What has Gable or Barrymore have that Spanky doesn't"?

At the show a little girl bombs her act due to stage fright and is crying as she will not be able to buy a dress she wants with the prize money.Nobley ,Spanky says he will win the prize and give her the money.Spanky must go tell the gang of his change in plans ,his mother won't let him and insists she will deliver his message. However she has no idea there is a plot to sabotage his act and cannot persuade the gang to stop them from giving Spanky "the works" .The gang bombards Spanky as he begins his act and the audience begins to laugh at him,his mother says she won't have her son laughed at .Spanky's mother pleads with the MC to take him off ,but he refuses. So she decides to rescue him herself.Spank's mother rushes to save her son from being laughed at and goes behind the back stage curtain with a pole to drag her son off. As she gets down on all fours and sticks the pole out to snag Spanky ,she snags him and is pulled out a bit from her hiding place. The grandmother sees her oppoutunity to teach her daughter a lesson.Grandma hoists the back curtain and now Spanky's mother is the one who gets snagged,a curtain hook has emeshed itself into her dress hem and her dress is on the rise.Spanky's mom squells and screaches as she realizes her predicament. The audience howls with approving laughter and shows her no mercy as they shift their laughter from Spanky to his now stripping mother.Grandma keeps up the hoisting as her daughter's dress is going higher but frantically she tries to free herself. With a mighty tug the curtain hits the ceiling taking her dress along with it.Spanky's mother has been knocked back to sitting on her heels by the curtain ripping her dress off and she is on the stage gazing up to see where her dress wentand is petrified from shock as the audience bellows with laughter.Spanky then comes to her aide with a stage prop to hide his frozen mother's embarassment and to cover her now slip clad body. This backfires as it has a carricature of a squatting dog's body on it with Spanky's mother's head perched on top , but it looks as if she is part of the animal's body howling at the moon. The audience goes completly wild over the sight of poor Spank's mom and laughs and howls at the now degarded mother. The girl who wouldn't have her son laughed at winds up completely humiliated herself. She wanted her son to win but she never dreamed she would wind up as part of the stage show herself. I'm sure the gang was pleased that Spanky's pushy stage mother is taught a lesson for making Spanky recite on stage .This short is a victory over stage mothers and a victory of kids over adults .The spectactle that is made of Spanky's mom is hysterically funny as the theater audience bellows with laughter at the site of her on the stage. The paradox that she is "crowned " with the stage prop reviels that she has been made to look like a female dog with the dog body and that is exactly what she was in this short a real stupid female dog. Some people enjoy seeing a mother get "lambasted" and completly humiliated as her son stands by helpless and has to watch.moreless
  • This is not a review but a rebuttal to sweetdas's review.

This is not really a review but a rebuttal to the review of Sweetdad's .

I understand what you are saying that it was wrong to do that to a mother and have her own son watching it happen also it was wrong for little children accross the country to see this happen to a mother. You also say that she really didn't do anything wrong ,she wanted her son to win in the show .

I beleve you are missing the point of this short.First Spanky does not want to be in the talent show his mom has entered him without even asking if he wants to or not.She is a very controlling stage mother and cannot be reasoned with. The grandmother asks her to reconsider putting Spanky on the stage and she will not listen to it at all.

Spanky's mother believes that everyone will fall madly in love with Spanky once he starts his recital. She is trying to relive her own life through the life of her son, there is something missing in her life she wants to be the center of attention herself.

When Spank asks if he can do anything he wants with the prize money she responds "Certainly I only want you to be a hit".When Spanky starts his act and flops due to the attack of the gang the mother cannot believe that the audience is laughing at him and she demands he be taken off as he is embarrassing her,she says "I won't have my son laughed at".

She has to stop this and rescue him ,when she is told the MC won't take him off she tries to run on the stage and take him off herself and is grabed by the MC and is told by hin " You can't break up that act" meaning the audience is really enjoying Spanky's plight and think it is very funny. She responds "OH NO " as she intends to get him off and little does she know that she will bring down the house when she winds up reluctently joining his act .

When she runs behind the curtain the MC informs the little girl that Spanky has already won first prize so everything that happens to her is unnecessary she could have gone home with the prize and her didnity and clothes intact.

When grandma sees her oppournity she jumps on it as there is a hook dangling beneath Spanky's mother's dress hem .The grandmother acts to teach her daughter a lesson and save Spanky. One might think it odd that a mother is stripping her daughter on stage but this is to deliver her a wake up call. When to curtain starts to rise the audience switches their attention to Spanky's mother ,the girl who said she wouldn't have her son laughed at now is being howled at unmercifully by the audience. You said spanky's pretty mother looked very sexy in her slip .Thats one of elements she is being reduced to a sex object to be ogled by the male audience .Spanky rushes the stage prop over to save his mother's ass from display only to have it backfire and make his mother look like a complete idiot as her head is now perched atop a squatting dogs body .This is a victory for Spanky and a major defeat for spanky's mother. No longer will spanky's mom be trying to live through her son and let him do as he wants.

Were there other parents in the rascals series that deserved some comeuppence much worse than Spanky's mother ,sure but this is a comedy and the justice delivered out to Spanky's mother is hilarious .You have to admit that watching her get her goose cooked and being made a complete laughing stock of was very funny. You must remember that Spanky's mother is the villan of this short and her comeuppence is extreme but she is the one that wanted Spanky in the spotlight never did she dream she got what she always wanted Spanky won first prize and she would up on stage the center of all attention.moreless
