Episode Summary

EDIT
Quittin' Time
AIRED:
Synclaire is angry when she is passed over for a promotion. When Khadijah asks her to define the type of job she is seeking, Synclaire's friends help her to realize that she would like to become the office manager. Khadijah insists that Synclaire cannot handle such a responsibility. She adds that, given Synclaire's frequent blunders, she probably would have been fired if she weren't the boss's cousin. Synclaire quits in a huff, and lands a job at Turkey Hut. Synclaire's replacement at Flavor, Mrs. Ryan, is efficient but extremely cold and impersonal. When Synclaire comes to the office to retrieve her belongings, she helps Mrs. Ryan find a file by explaining that her filing system is based on emotions. Things that will make Khadijah happy are in the front of the cabinet, while those that will upset her are hidden in the back. Khadijah realizes that Synclaire's sweet, cheerful personality makes up for her incompetence. She re-hires her as Vice President of Office Affairs (she had already quit the Turkey Hut after learning the contents of the turkey nuggets), and allows her the honor of firing Mrs. Ryan. • TRIVIA (1)

      • When Khadijah is looking at the videos that Max got from the video store, she reads the titles despite the fact that the boxes have no labels on them.

    • QUOTES (14)

      • Synclaire: (answers the phone) Flavor Magazine. News and views for you to peruse. Okay, please hold. And be held by the soothing sounds of Luther Vandross. Khadijah, it's Frank from the distributing company.
Khadijah: I don't wanna talk to that no-butt rip-off artist. He wants 50 bucks for a job he didn't even finish. Just tell him I left.
Frank: (over speakerphone) Hello Khadijah. It's no-butt Frank. Got a minute?
Synclaire: They put the speaker button and the hold button so close together. Hi Frank. Got you with my Khadijah impression didn't I? Oh, you wanna hear it again? Okay.
Khadijah: Frank you'll see your money when hell freezes over.
Synclaire: (clears her throat) Good wasn't I? Seriously, I'll tell Khadijah you called. Bye.

      • Khadijah: Good morning Eunetta. Welcome to Flavor.
Mrs. Ryan: I'd prefer Mrs. Ryan in the workplace.
Khadijah: We're all pretty informal around here...
        Mrs. Ryan: Mrs. Ryan!
        Khadijah: OK.

      • Regine: Oh, well, good for Syclaire, good for you, and good for the rent. Now, if I could only get Max to pay for all the time she spends here I could live here rent-free.
Max: I pay with my advice. (Kyle comes in) Always lock the door.

      • (After Max had a bad date)
Syclaire: Well, why don't you just join us?
Regine: Yeah, girl. All for one, one for all.
        Max: Thanks, you guys.
Regine: Hey, you're a sister, okay? When it happens to you, it happens to us. When you hurt, we all hurt.
        Syclaire: Power to the people.
(Regine gets a phone call, talks on the phone, then hangs up)
        Regine: Bye.
        Khadijah: Where are you goin'?
Regine: To meet up with Alonzo my favorite fireman. (Walks over to the table and picks up whipped cream) Are you done with this? (Smiles and starts dancing towards the door)
Max: Hey, what about all that "all for one" stuff.
Regine: Girl, I'm doin' this for you. If I have a good time, we all have a good time.

      • Synclaire: As Max once told me, 'It doesn't matter who you're stepping on if you're not coming back down.'
Max: I said that? I like it.

      • Max: Is there anything I can do?
Syclaire: Well, my resume looks a little skimpy. Can you guys take a look and tell me what you think?
        (Hands Max her resume)
Max: Got any more relatives in town?
Regine: Let me see. Well, girl here's your problem right here. All this stuff is true. You've got to be creative.
Max: Yes, you see here where it says you were a cashier? No, no, no. You were a retail services output processor.
Regine: And here, phone sales? Mmm-mm. Telecommunications martket researcher.
Overton: Yeah, and here where it says babysitter. How about "Stayed up late with kids."
        Syclaire: I liking that.
        Khadijah (Enters): What's up, Syclaire?
        Syclaire: Is someone addressing me?
Khadijah: Yeah. Khadijah, the person that you walked out on. The person that spent the rest of the day answering phones, sorting mail, and undoing a six-mile long paper clip chain.
Synclaire: Well, a bad mechanic blames his tools.
Overton: I find that a sign of immaturity.
Syclaire: Now, if you'll all excuse me there are just one too many Khadijah's in this room. (leaves)
Regine: Khadijah, I cannot believe you. I cannot believe that you would force your own cousin to quit.
        Khadijah: I didn't---
Regine (Holding her hand up, near Khadijah's face): Have you no sympathy? (Khadijah goes to say something, but Regine cuts her off) Have you no compassion?
        Khadijah: Yo, check this---
Regine: And if she can't pay her rent she's out on the street.

      • Khadijah: I'm not comin' out of this one lookin' stupid. (Enters the house and sees Syclaire)
Synclaire (Who is dressed like a turkey for her new job): Guess what. I got a job.
Max: So I see. Hey, has anyone asked you why you crossed the road today?
        (Khadijah and Max laugh)

      • Max: Synclaire, it's easy. You pick something you enjoy and you turn that into a career.
Regine: That's what I did. I love shopping, so I'm a buyer for a boutique.
Max: And sometimes, you can have a career that matters.
Kyle: Such as mine. You know, the art of making money make money is intricate and complex and arcane. In fact some people think that---
Synclaire: Well, Max, what made you want to become a lawyer?
Max: I've always enjoyed arguing. I'm always right. Case closed.

      • Khadijah: Whoopi agreed to do the cover! Aren't you excited?
Mrs. Ryan: If I had my leotard, I'd do a handspring.

      • Synclaire: At the Turkey Hut, I rediscovered something I was beginning to lose. (Puts on turkey hat) My dignity.

      • Khadijah: That's a troll. He's supposed to spread joy and happiness throughout the office.
Mrs. Ryan: Yes. Well, that's my job now.

      • Synclaire: You could be more supportive.
Khadijah: Supportive? I gave you a job when you were fresh off the bus, running around tossing your hat in the air like you were Mary Tyler Moore.

      • Synclaire: Gin!
        Khadijah: Synclaire, we're playing poker.
Synclaire: Tough noogies. I've got gin.

      • Khadijah (Synclaire is upset after Khadijah gave Jonathan a promotion and not her): Synclaire, Jonathan has a journalism degree; he's been here longer; and he doesn't spend his lunch hours re-enacting the "Rhythm Nation" video with thirty half-naked trolls.
Syclaire: Hey, those little guys spread joy and happiness throughout the office.
Khadijah: Well, I give them a promotion.

    • NOTES (1)

      • When Khadijah complains about Max renting movies about lawyers, Max replies, "Tomorrow we'll rent 'House Party 2' and you'll be happy." Queen Latifah made one of her first acting appearances in that 1991 film.
