She Ain't Heavy, She's My Mother
AIRED:
Khadijah is thrilled when her mother, Rita, comes to visit for Mother's Day; but Regine is distressed that her mother, Laverne, has tagged along. Laverne quickly gets on her daughter's nerves by pestering her to "get married and get some beans in that oven." During an afternoon at a spa, Regine and Laverne get into a nasty argument after Regine learns that her mother sought Kyle's advice on why she can't land a man. Khadijah and Rita also square off when Khadijah suggests that Laverne should let Regine live her own life. Their dispute is quickly resolved. Max advises Regine to apologize immediately to win the argument, but Laverne beats her to the punch. They finally come to an understanding after coming together to skip around the kitchen and mock the perpetually happy Rita and Khadijah. Meanwhile, Overton goes a little overboard with purchases from the Spending Channel as he seeks the perfect Mother's Day gift. Tag: A post-Mother's Day de-briefing. Music: "Rapper's Delight" (Sugar Hill Gang), sung by the castmoreless

    • QUOTES (16)

      • Synclaire: Take it from me. Fighting with your mother is pointless. You can't say how you really feel; you can't use indelicate language; and threatening to quit school and become a nun isn't nearly as effective as you'd think.
        Max: You're not even Catholic.
Khadijah: That's how her mother always won the argument!

      • Rita: I bought you some socks.
        Khadijah: They're beautiful. I'm sorry.
        Rita: I'm sorry, too.
        Khadijah: I love you.
        Rita: I love you, too.
Synclaire: I gotta get me a pair of those socks!

      • Synclaire: What's that smell?
Overton: That delicate aroma would be the new perfume I just bought for my mother.
        Kyle: Overton, don't open that...again.
Khadijah: Damn! It smell like cheese.
        Overton: It does not.
        (Regine enters)
Regine: Mmm. Who got some nachos?

      • Regine: I do love my mother, alright? I just love her more when she's in Jersey.

      • Synclaire: Regine, your mother is a hoot.
Regine: Yeah. She was a riot upstairs. Rifling through my underwear drawer. Good thing I hid my... (Looks at Kyle, who grins mischievously and licks frosting off his finger) Christmas list.

      • Synclaire (out of nowhere, at breakfast): Did you know within fifteen minutes of birth, a baby llama can outrun most humans?

      • Max: Did I miss anything?
Synclaire: Regine and her mom just made up.
Max: So what? I'm talking about breakfast. Got anymore of those banana pancakes?
Khadijah: Pookie, get her some pancakes.
        (Regine chases her)

      • Khadijah: I think y'all are having a little too much fun at our expense.
Laverne: Oh girl, face it. You two are freaks.

      • Synclaire: Mother's Day is supposed to be a day of love, and tenderness, and patriotism...Oh, now wait, now that's Veteran's Day.

      • Regine: You forgive me? For what?
Laverne: Well, what were you going to apologize for?
        Regine: To win the argument!

      • Laverne: And Kyle...Kyle's quite a catch.
(Max sits up, pulls off headphones and takes cucumber slices off eyes)
Max: Okay. There's no relaxing now.

      • Laverne: Regine honey, I'm just gonna make you half a cup. I don't want you up all night going.

      • Synclaire: Well, my mother used to say, "God couldn't be everywhere, so he made mothers." But that conflicted directly with Dad's "God is everywhere" speech. I still toss and turn over that one.

      • Synclaire: Overton, why not get your mom what I got mine last year: a musical doormat?
Overton: Nah. Sudden melodies just scare the hell out of my ma.

      • Max: Okay. I've got it. "Dear Mother, Happy Mother's Day. Max."
Synclaire: Oh, come on, Max! Isn't that just a little impersonal?
Max: Okay. Maybe you're right. "Best wishes, Max."

      • Rita: We're out of syrup, but there's plenty of sap right here.
