In this pilot episode, we take a look, perhaps unsurprisingly, at the element Calcium, well-known for its presence in bones, kettles and outer space. Without Calcium, we'd all be spineless, and indeed legless.

      • This episode (which is twenty minutes long) was not broadcast, but it can be seen on the DVD of Series 1.

      • As you will know from the note above, the makers of Look Around You were commissioned by the BBC to produce a Dependable Video Discus (DVD) of the first series. Each DVD, manufactured from reinforced lead, contains all the experimental data, both aural and visual, from the first series of the popular science series. This was the first time this process had been applied to the market place, and the technology was in its infancy, hence each DVD measures approximately seventy inches in diameter and weighs around six hundred kilogrammes. It is hoped that, in time, each discus will be small enough and light enough to be carried by two men.
