  • Friz Freleng's take on the poem "The Song of Hiawatha" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. An epic animated short for an epic poem.

Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Short Subject (cartoons), this animated short was once again a parody of rival studio Disney's Silly Symphony, "Little Hiawatha", from 1937. Warner Bros. are the best when it comes to parodies. As an interesting side-note, the design used for Hiawatha in this short was basically a caricature of a Disney animator Ward Kimball. This short was the first Bugs Bunny project Friz Freleng directed, even though it was around the 60th animated short Freleng directed at Warner Bros. Studios. The plot is nothing special, just the usual hunter/predator conflict. But anything with Bugs in it can not be bad. Parts of this short (most notably the entire "cooking pot scene") would later be seen in another short, What's Cookin', Doc? (1944). The voices in the short were once again all done by Mel Blanc. Unfortunately today this short has been banned from being aired on television, and has not been released on DVD yet.moreless
  • An unreceognized classic.

This episoee certainly is an unrecognized classics. After all, it was nominated for an academy award. Most people probably don't caere about this episode because most of it is reused in "What's Cookin' Doc?" directed by Bob Clampett in 1944. Nothing aganst that cartoon, (in fact, I love "What's Cookin' Doc"?)but this is the first and best. And that's all I have to say-first and best. This cartoon was directed by friz freleng and released in 1941, with Bugs Bunny and Hiawatha. The best scene is when Bugs plays "Guess who?" with Hiawatha. This truly is a very great cartoon and I reccomend it.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (0)

  • QUOTES (1)

    • Little Hiawatha: I'm gonna catch me a rabbit, and I'm gonna put him right in this pot. This pot right here. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's just what I'm gonna do.

  • NOTES (3)

    • Censorship - Due to pressure from Warner Bros., this cartoon was one of 11 pulled from rotation by the Cartoon Network for its 2001 "June Bugs" marathon, which was to show the complete chronology of Bugs Bunny cartoons. This is in addition to the "Censored 11" that have been withheld from distribution since 1968. The reason given was its purportedly offensive depiction of Native Americans.

    • Nominated for an Academy Award.

    • Surprisingly, this episode is not banned from Cartoon Network - it last aired in 2003 as part of the Bugs and Daffy Show. As a general rule, episodes with negative Indinan stereotypes are banned.

    • LITTLE HIAWATHA: Hey, hey, did, did you see a little rabbit run by here? Which way did he go? Which way did he go?
BUGS BUNNY: Him go dat way.

That quote is actually spoken with the same tone of voice as the famous quote "which way did he go, George, which way did he go?" found in several later Looney Tunes.
