  • Excellent pilot!

    8.9
I thought one of those black and white Daffy Duck and Porky Pig cartoons was the pilot, but it was not! It was the most obvious idea yet, it was the old fable "Tortoise beats the Hare". OK, so the whole episode was about Cecil Turtle and Bugs Bunny ( the first two characters) betting $10 for a race. Bugs thought he is going to win, but Cecil calls up other turtles to stay at places in the race. In the ending, Cecil ends up to be the winner of the race. Then Bugs figures out what Cecil planned to win. Bottom line: This cartoon is a good, obvious idea, and also a fabulous episode. Well, it looks like my work is done here, stay tuned into my next review TV.com members!moreless
  • Tex Avery's take on the classic fable.

    8.0
This short was definitely something special. Even though it was Bugs Bunny's only third appearance (in his most recognizable form, anyway), the short was directed by the legendary Tex Avery and was basically Warner Bros. Studios' answer to the Disney Studios' "Silly Symphony" titled "The Tortoise and the Hare", which in turn was a parody of the famous Aesop fable. A parody of a parody can not go wrong.

It is easily visible how much of a jerk Bugs can be in this short, coming along as somewhat a completely different character than what he'll be in his later years. However, he is by no means annoying nor does he not earn our sympathy. The character of Cecil Turtle was created by Avery and voiced by the "man of a 1,000 voices", Mel Blanc (the voice of Bugs Bunny and virtually 99% of all the other Looney Tunes characters). The voice used here was somewhat foreshadowing his later role as Barney Rubble, on Hanna-Barbera's "The Flintstones". Cecil would later develop into another one of Avery's most successful character characters when he moved on and got hired at MGM Studios, the Droopy Dog.

The short itself was filled with jokes, gags and "looney-ness". Even from the beginning you can see Avery's style of breaking the fourth wall, by having Bugs reading out loud the crew, cast and title of the short (even though he mispronounces every one of them). Over all, a great episode which could be considered a milestone in both Looney Tunes history and Tex Avery's career.moreless
  • Not a good Bugs Bunny cartoon after all

    6.0
This is the third early Bugs Bunny appearence, but the first in solo. This Tex Avery cartoon is a pretext for spoof the Silly Symphonies short "The Tortoise and the Hare" and also the childlish genius of Walt Disney. Regardless, Tortoise Beats Hare makes not a very funny cartoon, and eventually, i not very like the Bugs and Cecil episodes because Bugs are treated like a jerk. At least, the debut that Bugs read credits of the cartoon and some quotes saved this episodemoreless
